Wolves record: 4-17

Carmelo Anthony had an easier time matching the NBA record for points in a quarter than he did trying to figure it out.

Anthony matched George Gervin's NBA record with 33 points in the third and finished with a season-high 45 points in the Denver Nuggets' 116-105 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday night.

"I've never been a part of a quarter like that before,'' Anthony said. "I just felt that good. I can't explain it. My 3-ball was going in, driving to the basket, getting fouled. Just the complete game tonight.''

Anthony did it to the Wolves after Ryan Gomes got into quick third-quarter foul trouble with Corey Brewer and Mike Miller both out of the lineup with injuries.

The Wolves led 52-36 with less than four minutes remaining in the first half and were still ahead by 12 points at halftime after they exhibited a newfound spirit and rhythm since McHale was moved from the front office to replace the fired Randy Wittman.

Enter Anthony, the third player taken in the 2003 draft who has become a better all-around player this year but has struggled with his shooting because of an injured elbow.

Wednesday's loss was their seventh straight since a 105-103 win at Oklahoma City on Nov. 28 and eighth straight against the Nuggets.

The Wolves got 26 points each from Jefferson and Foye, and Love bounced back from a tough game in Tuesday's loss to Utah with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

He even went 6 for 6 from the free-throw line, but it wasn't nearly enough to overcome Anthony, who scored 15 points more than he had in any game this season — and added 11 rebounds.
