Wolves Updates 12-22 E-mail

Shooting guard Mike Miller received treatment on his sprained right ankle today, but the Wolves said he underwent no additional tests.

His status remains day-to-day.

Kevin Love wasn't injured Saturday, but the Wolves' rookie forward might be suffering from a bruised ego.

Love played a season-low seven minutes (technically, 6:55) against the Rockets, going 0 for 1 from the floor with two rebounds and one assist and sitting out the entire second half.

Coach Kevin McHale said after the game that he wanted veteran Mark Madsen's brand of energy against the taller Rockets.

"We've got to make sure we get Kevin comfortable inside. Once you get comfortable, your shots seem to go in a lot more."

Wherever that comfort is, Love hasn't found it yet.

"When I catch the ball down low, I'm thinking about it," Love said. "I miss a lot of chippy shots. I don't know if it's because I'm thinking I'm going to get fouled or get my shot blocked. I'm missing more than I'd like."

It’s important to remember that neither Love nor Mayo has played 30 NBA games yet. So it’s a bit early to reach any strong conclusions. Nevertheless, at this point I think McHale should be happy with the decision he made on draft day.

As for much of the rest of his decisions… well, many of those don’t look too good. And that suggests that maybe the T-wolves were wise to move McHale out of his position as general manager. Of course, that doesn’t mean I - or any other person with a blog - should take responsibility for that decision.

Among the many quirky subplots this year (Rashad McCants' epic falloff, the curious disappearance of Sebastian Telfair) is the case of Craig Smith. After a mediocre second season and a not-so-good start in which he struggled to find a niche, Smith has become probably the team's second-most dependable scorer. McHale, in particular, has chosen to highlight Smith's quickness by isolating him against bigger players and letting him drive to the hoop...

Flip Saunders already was speculated as a leading candidate to coach the 76ers next season. I'm hearing the Timberwolves are seriously considering redeploying him on their sidelines...

Eric Fleisher, not Marc, was the agent who conspired with Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor to sign Joe Smith to an illegitimate contract. I slouch corrected. . . . Minny Ha Ha is so bad, rising free agents are refusing to sign side deals.
