Wolves Updates 6/22 Part 2 E-mail

The Wolves are working today to set up at least meetings or interviews with Ricky Rubio and Hasheem Thabeet as they continue to explore options for Thursday’s draft.

Sounds like the Wolves are next on Rubio’s list of teams to talk to after he leaves a workout in Sacramento this afternoon. Not sure if that means in person or not.

David Kahn has been doing more background checks on Thabeet as well and earlier today was trying to set up something with agent Bill Duffy but they were playing phone tag.

The Wolves announced the team's schedule for the 2009 NBA Summer League presented by EA Sports, which runs from July 10-19 at the COX Pavilion and the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. The summer league includes entries from 21 NBA teams and features a 55-game schedule over a 10-day span in which the Wolves will play five games.

met with our new GM David Kahn, straight shooter...really wants to win and win now. Wasn't mad at my tweet, he wants me to more often.

Love said he posted the McHale news early last Wednesday without thinking after McHale called him and center Al Jefferson to let them know he wouldn't be back.

Ian Thomsen/SI.com puts David Kahn on his list of the Top 5 figures who will shape the draft.
The new Minnesota Timberwolves president has no track record and no head coach -- and therefore there is no predicting how he will spend his three first-round picks.

The Timberwolves brought a number of guards in over the weekend, including Flynn, Evans, Jennings, Jrue Holiday, Ty Lawson and Jeff Teague.

From what I gather, Evans won some hearts in Minnesota, and Flynn stole a few as well. As for Jennings, it sounds like the Wolves will pass.

The Timberwolves, who have three first-round picks, appear to be positioning themselves to move up from the sixth spot and assure themselves a shot at Ricky Rubio. A deal with Memphis, which has the No. 2 pick, isn't out of the question. Another scenario has Minnesota involved with the Wizards in a deal that would send Washington's No. 5 pick to Minnesota. The T-Wolves would then have the ultimate flexibility -- knowing they could get Tyreke Evans or Hasheem Thabeet with the fifth or sixth pick if Rubio is gone and knowing they could parlay the fifth and sixth picks in a deal with Memphis to move up.

The Timberwolves hold three first-round draft choices, the Nos. 6, 18 and 28 selections. Although additional youth might be overkill, there is the possibility of moving up, perhaps to get Thabeet as a bodyguard interior presence for Jefferson, perhaps to add much-needed flash in Rubio.

Beyond that, there is the opportunity to make the vacant coaching job more attractive.

Although Mark Jackson, Sam Mitchell and Mike Fratello are currently being mentioned, might a draft-night bonanza attract the interest of, say, a Jeff Van Gundy?
