Wolves @ Warriors 3/13/11

Written by Mike on .

Tonight the Wolves head to Oakland for a rematch against the Warriors. The last time these 2 teams met, Kevin Love had an absurd performance of 37 points and 23 rebounds on 13 shot attempts. It is performances like these that make me baffled as to why anyone would ever want to trade Love.

The Wolves are coming off of 2 blowout wins against Indy and Utah which should have our confidence high. Oracle arena, however, is a tough venue and the Wolves will have their work cut out for them. Some brief burning questions for a Sunday evening:

1. Can the Wolves ride their momentum and get their 3rd straight, continue their improvement versus last season?

2. Can we contend the perimeter in Oakland this evening?

3. On Friday, Anthony Randolph received 6 minutes due to the blowout situation. How in the world is he going to fit in with the roster? We need to create space for him in a bad way.

4. Rumors surfaced that Rambis was going to be ousted this offseason. Kelvin Sampson is rumored to be a front runner. This sounds like agent-fueled nonsense to me. Numerous players came to Rambis' defense this morning in the Star Tribune. This seemed odd, but important. Why would the Wolves oust Rambis in favor of this guy in particular? Seems fishy/odd. Then again, this is a Kahn decision we are talking about here...

Jazz vs. Wolves 3/11/11

Written by Mike on .

Tonight Big Al makes his return in a very winnable game against a Utah team very much in transition. An odd time to go through such drastic deconstruction, it is difficult to say what the future holds for Utah. They are still very much a veteran team. It should be an interesting offseason for them, as it will be the Wolves. The usual slew of random questions to think about if you have the privilege of watching tonight's doozy:

1. How is Ty Corbin as a coach for Utah? I think the saddest thing about the Sloan situation was its abruptness. He didn't get a farewell tour or nearly the respectful, heralded exit he deserved. Furthermore, one would think that order of operations may have been a worthwhile consideration for the Jazz. Maybe if Sloan stuck it out past the trade deadline he would still be on the sidelines?

2. Wes Johnson. Has he recovered from his illness? I called him out the other day for having an inconsistent season. He has had two poor games in a row now, but clearly illness is an acceptable alibi. The accusation is unjust until he gets a game or two off the mend.

3. Michael Beasley allegedly was kicked out of the West End movie theatre. Oddly, the article title calls out Mike, but him and multiple teammates were thrown out for absurd behavior. I find it unfair the article specifically calls out Mike. Very poor journalism.

4. The Wolves played a game against a dreadful team the other night, and have a decent schedule the rest of the way. What do you think the final record will be? How much of an improvement will the team net versus last year? Is this enough to justify holding onto Rambis?

Love Gets Record-Setting 52nd Double-Double

Written by Derek Hanson on .

kevin_love_double_double

TWB would like to congratulate Kevin Love on breaking the post-merger record for consecutive double-doubles.  With his 16 point, 21 rebound performance against Indiana, Love stepped past Moses Malone and now stands alone in the history books.  (Well unless you count Wilt Chamberlain's 200+ streak pre-merger.  But seriously, pre-merger = lame.)  I know Love has taken some heat on this site, some fair, some not, but regardless of what you think of the guy, there's no denying that he stands at the epicenter of anything that could be considered remotely uplifting during yet another brutal loss-filled season.  He made headlines earlier in the year with his 31-31 in November.  Then he became the first Wolves player in the post-Garnett era to represent the team in the All-Star Game.  Now his 52-game double-double streak has once again given Wolves fans something to smile about, and something to continue to look forward to as he extends the streak even further.   Hey, when you're 16-50 and your last playoff run was seven years ago, it's all about the little things.  Here's a howl-out to Kevin Love for giving us a reason to keep watching!

Some randomness...

What's with Timberwolves named Kevin and breaking Moses Malone's historic distinctions?   Kevin Garnett was the first player to come to the NBA directly from high school since Moses Malone.   Kevin Love was the first player to record 51 straight double-doubles since Moses Malone.  Do you think that if we got Moses Malone to come to Target Center and sacrifice a live chicken at center court, we could finally remove the bad ju-ju from this franchise?

52 double-doubles...  Twin Cities...   Is it just me or is Kevin Love's streak the perfect storm for a Wrigley's Double-Mint Gum campaign?  Kevin, I sincerely hope you'll give me a small cut of the profits when you shoot the commercial.

Love Approaches Historic Night

Written by Mike on .

Two extremely important and very serious stories have developed in the last 24 hours.

First and absolutely foremost without question: Planters/Nabisco Cheez Balls (now called Cheez Mania) snacks have resurfaced in limited distribution (I assume) at Target stores. These gems have been gone for years and go down in history along with Baked Sour Cream and Cheddar Lays w/ French Onion Dip and Flamin Hot Cheetos (Jalapeno Cheddar if in dire straits, or puffcorn if near death) as the greatest salty snack of all time. Why they were discontinued remains to be seen and said decision may go down as the biggest fail in recent United States history. In fact, a petition exists with over 16,000 signatures (which we can go ahead and round up to 4.3 million for the sake of discussion) to bring back the snack. Initial signs of a resurface caught my eye when Target introduced a Market Pantry private label-branded tub of the cheese balls for a hefty price. I bit. They were nothing like the Planters/Kraft/Nabisco balls of yesteryear. Dry and stale in texture. Weak flavor profile. The cheese tasted like cheddar ramen from freshman year of college, made in the dorm bathroom sink. You know, the flavor you ate when all of the chicken, beef and pesto ones ran out and you had to eat to survive? Not good. Panic ensued. Alas, an afternoon jaunt to the Minnetonka-Ridgedale Target to pick up lunch items yielded the shocking, double-take discovery of the snack; now merchandised in the front-of-store $1.00 section end-cap in a 2.75 oz size. They were opened immediately (after arriving back at work, of course).

It had been probably (I don’t know exactly) 10 years or more since something as incredible as Cheez Balls existed/happened/were forefront on our minds.

Secondarily, and also not coincidentally, not since October 18th, 1979 has a player done what Kevin Love may very well do against the Pacers tonight in extending his streak of consecutive double-doubles to 52 games in a row. Nearly 32 years, over three times that of the approximate discontinuation of Cheez Balls. Moses Malone’s streak of 51 games, now tied by Love, ended on that day. At this time, Cheese Ballz  may very well have been in full force. Afros were all the rage, Love wasn’t even born, Darrell “Kurt” Rhombus was playing in the NBA. A long time ago, indeed. A breakdown of the record and such can be found here. Congratulations Mr. Love for getting this far. Assuming you play tonight,, I think we can all put down the 15-win record and the anti-Kahnbis sentiment if only for an evening. It is too bad you have to break 30year old records to get us to end the self-loathing.

Opinion on Love’s streak seems a bit divided, but generally favorable. Many fans alike are happy about the streak, but others rip on it because of our ‘modest’ win total. Many Wolves fans do not seem to be too irrational on the realities of his streak as it pertains to our record. We are not, in fact, from Portland, New York and Toronto which is only a good thing for any reader, human in general. A recent article tells a more negative story with these kinds of statistical anomalies. And I do agree: stats are misleading. Furthermore, stats and figures can also be spun in just about any direction to form your argument for better or worse. However, this is not the topic at hand. In this situation, my simple stance is: enjoy something positive. The other night against Dallas, watching on TV, it was enjoyable seeing Kevin get a standing ovation from the home crowd. It was a nice moment amidst the Wolves-fandom reality of consistently wading chest high through a sewage lagoon. It was just another sign that, deep down, this city wants a quality basketball product and would support it if not for the nincompoops in the front office.  During the Garnett years, Target Center was jammed to the brim. This could happen again easily with a few more roster moves and the addition of a guy named Ricky Rubio. Here’s looking at you Mr. Kahn to provide such a product. I wish the faith were stronger and that, well, you weren’t totally full of baloney, but let’s not worry about such trivialities right now.

Also relevant is that, with a victory, the Wolves will improve their record over last year (16 wins). This would be a nice win in many ways for our favorite team.

Other thought points for tonight’s game and beyond:

1.       Josh McRoberts was nearly traded for OJ Mayo at the trade deadline. Is there something we are missing or is he as blatantly mediocre as he seems? Why would Memphis trade OJ for him? Why on earth didn’t we get in on this?

2.       Can Jonny Flynn continue his streak of relatively competent play? Will he try another unnecessary, eye-roll-worthy, between-the-legs pass amidst the stretch of decent play?

3.       What will the Wolves do about the frontcourt rotation with AR showing he can produce, Pek improving, Tolliver providing energy…and a lifeless Darko still getting the starting job? Think to Darko’s very late 1st half foul trouble vs. Dallas and a 2nd half “injury”. Without these incidences, highly skilled and immediate fan favorite Anthony Randolph likely wouldn’t have even played despite a stretch of pretty impressive ball over the weekend. This is a large long-term problem, with over $30 million committed to the aforementioned; and a major question mark moving forward with this team. We have to extend AR, but have little room for him and it is obvious. Does anyone else get an eerie feeling Darko may head back overseas after this season despite his contract? Wouldn’t surprise me.

4.       Mikey Beasley has had a rough patch of late and put up a pretty ugly 20 points against Dallas. Can he snap out of it and ride his momentum into the offseason? He showed so much promise early on this year but concerns have developed of late. Just a slump or something more? Regardless, this clip always makes me forgive any bad play he makes, especially imagining how Rhombus or Kahn would react to seeing him act like that.

5.       Wes had a rough outing against Dallas after a series of games that somewhat irrationally moved several fans on to the Wes bandwagon. The thing is Wes has had similar stretches of terrific play, followed by a 4-5 game vanishing act, all season long. This is not new. In fact, check out his game logs if you don’t believe me.

Just rambling. Anyhow, I hope everyone (hopefully) enjoys a T-Wolf becoming part of the record books tonight. Maybe we can drop the cynicism for a Minnesota minute here and hope for the best, and maybe not once again expect the worst. (Fine, we’ll probably lose when Rambis draws up a crunch time play for Lazar Hayward).

Lastly, if anyone wants to attend the game for cheap tonight to potentially witness a bit of history in person, tickets were reduced to $4.20 for Uppers and $42 for lowers  (get it? 42?) to catch the historic night. I may just try to sneak over there myself. I know we are a losing team, but being there for Love’s 31-31 game was something I will never forget. I would encourage all to be there if they can to have the memory and experience the imminent ovation. No, the Wolves ticket peeps did not ask me to do this, I promise.

TWolves fall to the Dallas Mavericks 105 - 108

Well, we choked away another potential win. I don't really have the heart to say anything about this, as all these losses are the same. And apparently no one else does either. I don't blame you guys.

Once again, KLove drops 23 and 17, which is great and all. But we lost. Again.

Luke Ridnour = the Opposite of Clutch.  As TWB Forum member "9Deuce" said in the game thread:

Yep..and our excellent coaching staff keeps giving him the ball at the end games and keep letting him do what he does which are pretty basic, the usual getting the ball taken away, not passing to open guys, driving down the lane to lose the ball or get it block, and forcing shots. Do they think he will get better?

I blame on this on Flynn...who sucks even more than Ridinour that Ridinour have to play at the end of games over him. If he was just sightly good we wouldn't have to see this mess called Luke Ridinour throw away games. Last year Brandon Jennings played in crunch time and he was a rookie.

I think Anthony Randolph should be our new point-forward. I'm serious here. His handles are insane for a seven footer!  Please see our possession with 20 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, and tell me otherwise.  Randolph dribbles baseline with some nifty moves and kicks it out to Flynn for a wide-open three. It was pretty sweet. If only for entertainment purposes, I'd take Randolph over Flynn as our backup PG.

Beasley... decent other than his not great shooting, and turnovers.

Darko... ehhhh.

Wes... bad.

Ridnour... terrible.

Our bench (for the most part)... terrible.

Sorry for the negativity Wolves faithful. But we are just a bad team, folks.

However, I guess I can say that our turnovers, FG%, 3's made, rebounding, blocks, and fouls was all nearly identical to the Mavs tonight. In that regard, against an elite team, that's another moral victory to notch on our collective belts. The Mavs did make 4 more free-throws than us (with 4 less attempts but 8 less misses), which was the difference in a 3 point game.

Maybe next time.  We take on the Pacers Wednesday night at Target Center. Indiana is (surprisingly?) the 8th seed in the East right now.

If you are so inclined, come chat with us about the game in the TWolves Blog Forums.  You can find the game thread HERE.

Corey is Coming Home

Written by Pants on .

Corey Brewer just saw his first action as a Mav this last weekend.  Going off the 2-4, 10 minute performance yesterday I think we can safely say the man is a dominating force of nature in the making.  To be honest I'm not sure who I'd be more excited to see play well tonight, Beasley, Love, Anthony Randolph or Turbo. It seems destiny for him to give Beasley fits on defense.

THE OPTOMETRIST IS IN

The double double record is all but a foregone conclusion.  Kevin has taken it up a notch to go after the 20-20 streak.  It'd be amusing if another team (probably a bad one) went into a game with the sole intent of ending his streak. Can you imagine the Wolves broadcast booth getting more and more panicked as the 4th quarter went on? Would FSN swap out the mini scoreboard in the upper corner with a double double gadget? Would Fox find a way to conjure up their NFL robot guy into a physical being to help K.Love complete the double double? It'd be glorious.

Wolves Set to Offer Love BIG Money

Written by Jamaal Gilbert on .

If you were worried about Kevin Love's future with the Wolves, you can rest easy.

According to the St. Paul Pioneer Press, one-time All-Star Love can look forward to a contract extension offer of six years in the $70 million range once a new NBA labor deal is reached. The NBA's collective bargaining agreement expires June 30.

As we know, Love, 22, can become a restricted free agent after the 2012-2013 season.

Thankfully, team brass isn't going to hold Love - or us fans - in suspense. He's a favorite, and obviously the team believes he's part of the solution, not just another expendable trade piece.

Love, who is being paid $4.61 million this season and is signed for $6.1 million next season, leads the NBA in rebounding (15.5 average) and double-doubles (56, five more than LAC's Blake Griffin), and ranks 18th in scoring with a 20.9-point average.

Love has stated his willingness - and preference - to stay in Minnesota, but has put the onus on the front office to get something done. Looks like the youngster is about to get his wish.

Where in the World is Corey Brewer?

Written by Pants on .

The New York Knicks have decided to buy out Corey Brewer?!? This seems surprising given that they traded a slew of SG/SFs to the Nuggets. Cheers to Corey (hopefully) ending up in the NBA Finals this year with the Celtics. It'd be great to see him under the wing of KG.

Source a slew of tweets from Marc Stein, as well as more on ESPN.com:

The NBA's buyout market will soon have a surprise addition: New York Knicks' Corey Brewer. The Knicks and Brewer are closing in on a buyout agreement that will make the former Minnesota swingman a free agent, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.

Because Brewer will be officially released before March 1, he's eligible to play in the playoffs with another team. Sources say Boston, San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Dallas are among the teams with the most interest in Brewer, who joined the Knicks only last week as part of the Carmelo Anthony deal.

It confuses me that the Knicks couldn't use him at all, especially with their depleted depth.  But hey, that's the Knicks for ya.

Take your pick of your contender, Turbo.  It will be great to see you land on a team that will appreciate and utilize you properly.  Too bad the Celtics didn't know about this sooner. They could have signed Brewer and kept Perkins. Stinks for them. Brewer + Perkins are waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than Jeff Green + Krstic.

Kahn Ends Up on the Couch Once Again

Written by Mike on .

2841021692_1156e32b53

Picture this. It's a fine Saturday night. You are as single as the day you were born, and a group of you and your closest friends enter a local watering hole. The group sits at a corner table, facing a set of 50''  televisions and orders a few rounds of IPA and a plate of boneless buffalo wings that top even Smalley's fantastic mouth-watering recipe, a TWolvesBlog staff favorite. Laughter and general merriment ensues. Within moments, nine members of the opposite sex enter and sit at the table closest to you and your ten friends. Courtesy of the ever-famous 'liquid courage' you immediately start boasting to your friends, and several fellow bar patrons, about how you are going to pick up one or more of the fine specimens at the other table. This piques the interest of your friends, who immediately begin their collective pursuit of the females (or males if you are female/prefer that lifestyle) at the opposite table.  Being the kind friend that you are, you decide to buy round after round of cocktails for your pals to fuel the fire, and watch with a big smile as they slowly engage in successful courtship. One by one, they trickle out, on your bar tab, with a companion for the evening. Later only one 'couple' remains, and they are showing positive body language. However, your buddy drove to the bar, and you offer up your bed to be safe. You close out the tab, which amounted to $794.76, plus a tip (to which you chuckle and leave 5%), and stumble home with your friend and his/her attractive companion. Once you arrive home to your modest, disheveled apartment, they start to focus on a 'singular' goal, and saunter off into your bedroom where you have laid out rose pedals in the shape of a heart. You then go to bed by yourself on the couch, deleting a series of text messages your friends sent you, all making fun of your silly boasting and general cocky ways. No one thanks you for the drinks. And it doesn't even cross your mind that you let all of this happen, for you are somehow happy you ended up with a plate of buffalo wings for eight hundred bucks.

Ladies and gentlemen: David Kahn.

As those remaining fans know by now: Kahn's 18th window (or so) of opportunity to improve a 13-win franchise closed this afternoon. An afternoon in which O.J Mayo was nearly traded for an average draft pick and Josh McRoberts' 7 and 5 average.  The Wolves were rumored to be in pursuit of Raja Bell and Aaron Brooks. Nice.

It's hard to sum up the feeling many of us probably have. The trade deadline did indeed yield us a solid young prospect who has shown he can make some noise in this league. This is a positive thing, so let's not make this a rant about Anthony Randolph. However, Kahn had $12 million in cap space, which is now gone, and he did nothing but save a division rival an immense amount of money, while simultaneously allowing the Knicks to become a title contender. And he got nothing in return. Nothing. He picked up his buddies' tab while they came away with the gold, and he fell asleep on the couch while everyone else went into the bedroom. What a sham.

I think the time for emotionally-driven ranting has come and gone, but I want to ask David Kahn to please do something for us. 'Rumors,' of which we admittedly cannot formally confirm the validity, have surfaced that Glen Taylor's partners are basically preventing the team from adding any salary at the current time, despite being under the salary cap. $20 million dollar losses will do that to a minority owner. I get it. We get it. We can be rational. However David, if this is the case, then stop with the big talk. This is now your <insert #> window of opportunity in which you lay out, in plain english, that you are going to do something major with the King's Ransom worth of assets, many gifted to you by the previous regime, that you have wasted away into 28 wins under your nearly two year command.  Each and every time you have talked a big game you have come up miles short while everyone around you has had a successful night at the bar. Just. Stop. Talking. Nobody likes a dishonest man. Or a telemarketer. You are making a fool out of yourself. Wolves fans are not stupid. We know that your latest riff raff about how you are going to trade for a star when the CBA is finalized is another farce. If the team is facing financial difficulties and you really feel like you need to speak, then try saying something like this:

Fans, the deadline came and went today. I realize many of you are disappointed that I under-delivered on my word to you. Understand that I have your best interests in mind in creating a quality basketball product. I realize, furthermore that the team is not performing nearly up your standards. We believe that adding significant dollars to our payroll will limit our flexibility in the future, especially in light of a potential hard salary cap. Consider the significant hindrances large contracts have had on the flexiblity of this very ball club during the past decade. And while opportunities may have presented themselves, the player production per dollar was not enough to justify our limited possibilities for personnel addition. With that said, I realize additions are mandatory for us to get to where we want to be. We are definitely not done building this team, and still expect big changes.  Myself and ownership will continue to pursue options and will make a calculated risk when the time is right. We feel our next opportunity will be this summer when major changes to the Collective Bargaining Agreement could impact the salary cap, an event we have strategically prepared for. While we may not be able to add a significant contract, we feel it will be a great time to add talented players to our ever-changing roster.

It doesn't explain why on earth OJ Mayo isn't en route to Target Center, but it's a start. On one hand, it's easy to immediately jump on the "well why the hell would I buy tickets" brouhaha in reaction to a  statement like that. It is also an empty 'promise.' But it also establishes a sense of accountability, realism, and manages expectations. Frankly, the fans were lead on on Thursday. We deserve better than this after three years of waiting for our cap space to be used. It is now gone. The truth hurts, and while the above would probably cause just as much uproar as the events that transpired this afternoon, it would be difficult to not respect the take substituted for a bunch of added nonsense. Would you rather be lead on again through lies (yes, outright lies) of "windows" and "singular moves" or would you rather just know the honest truth? Because that is the honest truth: no 'big' move is coming. And, Mr. Kahn,  you just tried to open another window for this summer, and you have no cap space. Yeah, we believe you David. Good one.

This is the main reason many fans seem upset. Not because nothing happened, but because we were lead to believe something would. We had to also stomach echoes of  "we are done rebuilding" when describing a 13-win team lead by a questionable coach. Instead, we facilitated at a dramatic level, and were not even compensated for it. This is not ok. This is not up to our, rather low might I add, expectations. On that note: you went after Aaron Brooks? Really?

On one hand I can understand Kahn's position. Cheap ownership and a small group of hungry, just about fed up, fans of a 13-win team are the worst combination in sports. With that said, Kahn takes a lot of heat that is probably undeserved due to financial handicaps out of his control. But, it's the 'window' and 'singular' baloney that makes this whole process unacceptable, and makes any sense of sympathy drop through the floor. Not to mention Rambis, but that horse is dead and beaten, and there happens to be $4 million still owed to the remains.

So, Kahn, you made another promise. You had better deliver. We are not stupid. We know your tactics, and they are not selling any more tickets. We know very well that the latest report about 'big things' this summer will likely leave you sleeping on the couch, while the remaining six members of Wolves Nation assemble their pitchforks yet again.

Wolves Shopping Jonny

Flynn Rumors

ESPN has been flashing rumors about Jonny Flynn being moved most of the day today.  Given that it hit the rumor mill was churning before a deal happened I'm guessing nothing is coming of it.  First it was Raja, then it was Jared Jefferies or Aaron Brooks. If you haven't checked out Brooks' numbers do so, they are horrible. We don't need Mike James back.  This has been a disaster of a year for Flynn  but none of those players do anything for me.

I'd hoped when I heard Houston involved that Terrence Williams might be up for consideration.

CONSPIRACY THEORY:  This latest round of time off was agreed to by Kahn and Flynn as way to hold his value a little before a trade.  It is better to be injured than bad after all.

Big Al in Utah

Al Jefferson is coincidentally having his best month since his knee injury (23/9) at the same time the Utah Jazz Organization is having his Worst month in decades. Kahn successfully delivered his Poison Pill to the Jazz and they gave us a couple of picks for it.  Not bad David, not bad.

Super Cool Beas

The hair speaks for itself (too bad the hair can't block-out on missed FT's in the last 15 seconds).
