Chad Ford/ESPN on what the lottery teams would do with the #1 pick in the draft. On the Wolves:
Odds of winning the lottery: 13.8 percent
The Wolves need a franchise point guard more than they need a franchise power forward. Al Jefferson is having an All-Star-caliber season, but Sebastian Telfair is easily replaceable.

However, the Wolves would likely opt for Beasley. Jefferson can move to the center position if Beasley comes on board. And the Wolves still believe that Randy Foye will eventually be the team's point guard.

If I were Kevin McHale, I'd go with Rose. But, since McHale almost always gets this wrong come June, we'll stick with Beasley here.

A River Hills home belonging to former NBA star Latrell Sprewell was foreclosed on Monday after he failed to show up in court to Monday contest the action brought by a bank that held his mortgage.

The holder of the mortgage, RBS Citizens Bank, told Milwaukee County Circuit Court Judge David Hansher that Sprewell owes $320,284. According to River Hills records, the house is assessed at $610,000 and has an estimated fair market value of $667,980; he bought the house in 1994 for $405,000.

Gary Parrish/CBS Sports lists the top 10 high school players from every year since 2002 and notes where they are now. The lists include a few current and former Timberwolves players.

Most likely draft spot: Third

Biggest need: Power forward. With 2006 lottery pick Randy Foye at point guard, the Wolves could solidify their frontcourt for the future by adding Beasley.

Most likely to select at No. 1: Michael Beasley. As long as the Wolves can play Al Jefferson at center, there's room for Beasley to slide into the power forward position.

Timberwolves forward Ryan Gomes is also Cape Verdean, and while the ex-Celtic was considering playing for the country, impending fatherhood led him to decline the invitation.

"My goal is to definitely play for the team in 2012 and hopefully qualify for the Olympics," said Gomes. "It's an honor to have been asked to play for the team and represent where my family and I are from."

Think about one other person. Think about Maria Contardo, a student advocate at East Side High in Newark, N.J. She has two kids of her own, but also helped raise Randy Foye, once a star at Villanova and now a guard for the NBA's Minnesota Timberwolves, after Foye was abandoned on the streets as a young kid.

The day before the 2006 NBA draft -- a draft in which Foye would be selected seventh -- she could scarcely contain herself.

''There's no blood running,'' she said, ''but it can't be any better if he was a blood relative. It can't be.''

Now the Bulls will move on to the next round of interviews, certain to include Johnson this week. Paxson has revealed his desire to connect personally with his hire, though. And despite certain shared philosophical beliefs, it's hard picturing Johnson and Paxson hitting it off.

Sources said Casey interviewed along with Rick Carlisle because the latter talked about making the former Timberwolves coach his lead assistant should Carlisle land the job. That same scenario could play out in Dallas, which just hired Carlisle, should Casey not land the Bulls job.

Marc Stein/ESPN on the Bulls coaching search:
They will continue to consider former Minnesota coach Dwane Casey, who has already interviewed once with the Bulls and is bound for Dallas as an assistant to Rick Carlisle if he can't get the Bulls' job.

Former Timberwolves teammates Kevin Garnett and Joe Smith (now a Cavalier) always get together to honor their late teammate Malik Sealy each time they play against each other.

Sealy was killed in a Minneapolis suburb May 20, 2000, while driving home from Garnett's birthday party when his SUV was struck by a drunken driver's pickup truck traveling the wrong way down the highway.

"Even now, in this series, when I check into the game we have a certain greeting for each other," Smith said. "We both have a tattoo of Malik Sealy on our arms from when he passed away. So we touch the tattoos together and give each other a little brief hug. We are pretty close.

Smith said he thought Phengsene “got off too easy,” after the incident. He has since been charged in two more drunken-driving cases.
One came in October 2006. Then, on March 30, 2008, Phengsene was arrested in Minneapolis on suspicion of drunken driving.
He was sentenced to another eight years in prison on April 28.

The Timberwolves, who have the Nos. 31 and 34 picks in June's NBA draft, have had five front-office officials scouting in Europe since the end of the regular season, and it's a good bet that at least one, or both picks, could be used on overseas prospects.

Meet grandmother Ruth Martin. Today, Foye -- who still lives in New Jersey in the offseason -- will have a party in his back yard for Martin, and for Betty Foye, his other grandmother. Together, they kept Foye on the right path.

"She was so important," Foye said of Martin. "She showed me the ins and outs of being a man, which I needed because there wasn't a role model around me at the time. She showed me how to treat people, how you treat a woman, things like that."

In hoops news, NBA rookies Al Horford and Taurean Green are back on Florida's campus this month taking classes during the Summer A session. Corey Brewer wanted to come back, too, but his offseason workout schedule with the Timberwolves prevented it.

UNC has produced a young crop of NBA talent as well. Raymond Felton has finished in the top 10 in the league in assists during his first two seasons; Marvin Williams has helped transform the Atlanta Hawks into playoff contenders, and Rashad McCants was the Minnesota Timberwolves' second-leading scorer this season. Sean May and Brandan Wright are also former Tar Heels who look to play a significant role on their teams next season.

The Dallas Mavericks and Rick Carlisle reached a verbal agreement on a four-year coaching contract Friday night that seals his hiring as Avery Johnson's successor...

...Carlisle arrived in Dallas on Thursday with his family. Both he and the Mavericks expected a Friday news conference. Carlisle was joined in town by the two former NBA head coaches -- Dwane Casey and Terry Stotts -- who will be hired as assistants on his new staff.

Hoiberg to represent Wolves at lottery E-mail
Written by SG
Friday, 09 May 2008
Timberwolves assistant GM Fred Hoiberg will represent the team at the NBA draft lottery on May 20 in Secaucus, N.J. The Wolves have a 13.8 percent chance of getting the No. 1 pick and a 14.2 percent chance of getting No. 2. They currently are in the No. 3 spot. The lowest spot the Wolves could fall to is No. 6.

Hoiberg represented the Wolves in the 2004 lottery, when they had the No. 14 spot and a .5 percent chance of moving up. They didn't budge.

Hoiberg didn't take any good-luck charms to that lottery but says he will this time. He won't reveal what he's taking, however.

Every major franchise or team in the Star Tribune's coverage area — just like most franchises or teams in most newspapers' coverage areas — has multiple blogs devoted to it, featuring the work of both passionate fans and inflamed critics. To use one example, at any random Timberwolves games this past season, there were no fewer than three or four writers from alternative media sources, representing online outlets such as Hoopsworld.com, SLAMonline.com and the thinking fan's site of choice, Britt Robson's "On the Ball''  from rakemag.com. Me? I was there a lot, too, representing both MinnPost.com and SI.com, where I'm a regular contributor.

But Szczerbiak supposedly took exception to being treated like a bug in the years following his rookie season, and he and Garnett got into a confrontation over respect. The two appeared to have patched things up. No matter, Szczerbiak eventually was shipped off in one of Kevin McHale's worst deals. Ricky Davis was the co-headliner, and a heap of lousy players were included both ways. But, of course, McHale tossed in a first-round pick.

Now Wally and K.G. are facing each other. The winner gets the right (most likely) to face Saunders and his Detroit Pistons in the conference finals. The Pistons aren't having many problems against the Orlando Magic.

Criteria included what the teams "give back to fans who invest their time and money in the organization."
