-Gophers men's basketball coach Tubby Smith and ex-Gopher Jim Petersen, the Timberwolves' TV analyst, finished at plus-2 in a team scramble while competing for a $100,000 scholarship at the posh Reynolds Plantation golf course near Atlanta the other day.
-It's unclear whether the Timberwolves would take Michael Beasley of Kansas State or Derrick Rose of Memphis if they were to land the top pick in June's NBA draft. But people in the know say Beasley is the more talented of the pair.
-Look for Timberwolves TV analyst Jim Petersen to agree to a three-year contract extension soon.
Multiple sources close to the process have described Carlisle as the
Mavs' clear-cut No. 1 candidate, indicating that contract negotiations
are already underway. It's also believed that Carlisle intends to bring
two recent NBA head coaches to Dallas as assistants on his staff --
Dwane Casey and Terry Stotts -- but one team source insisted: "Nothing
is done with anyone."
