Henry Abbott/TrueHoop talked to Kevin Love on the way to photo shoots for rookie trading cards in New York.
-When he was training with Joe Abunassar, Love was eating specially
prepared food that arrived in a bag every day. That's all he ate. He
has given himself the month of July off of that regimen. He didn't
really go into detail as to why, but you can imagine that eating food
by the bag every day could get a little old.
-Although his ankle was a little screwy and he didn't really get to
play, Love enjoyed coach P.J. Carlesimo, who is coaching the USA
Basketball Select team that has been squaring off against Team USA...
-...I mentioned that I thought Rashad McCants could be the kind of guy who
could really make a difference -- last season, it seemed to me, he was
the guy who could score when the team was having trouble. Kevin said:
"Mike Miller. Al Jefferson, all those guys ... I don't think we're
going to have trouble scoring"

Terms of Gomes’ contract with the Timberwolves have
not yet been released. Word on the street is that the deal is for five
years and $21 million. Gomes, we’re told, owns a player option and can
declare himself a free agent after the 2009-2010 season, if he wishes.
Among those auditioning for the Timberwolves' radio analyst job vacated by Billy McKinney are former Wolves Tony Campbell and Dean Garrett and former Gophers and NBA guard Kevin Lynch, who is a radio analyst for the Gophers.

The Minnesota Timberwolves and restricted free agent forward Ryan Gomes have agreed in principle on a five-year contract.
The deal was agreed upon Friday, agent Bob Myers said. Gomes was expected to sign the contract on Tuesday...
Myers declined to divulge financial terms of the deal, but said it includes a player option for the fifth year.
The Timberwolves will discuss the five-year deal reached with
restricted free-agent forward Ryan Gomes at a news conference today at
a Minneapolis community center where he recently donated an automated
external defibrillator.
Timberwolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale will
join Gomes for a 3 p.m. press conference on Tuesday, and afterwards
we'll talk to Gomes individually to obtain a more intimate reaction...
Minnesota's roster is now all but finalized, as the two remaining free
agents (Michael Doleac and Chris Richard) are expected to depart and
return, respectively.
Assuming Love is ready to start alongside Jefferson right away -- and
with the sharpshooting Miller poised to give the Wolves' much-needed
dose of experience -- it would appear that Gomes is most likely to come
off the bench with Smith, with McCants and Brewer in the mix as well.
"I think that around the organization there's a lot of optimism, and I think he feels the same way," Myers said.

Timberwolves coach Randy Wittman said he has hired Dean Cooper, vice president of player personnel for the Houston Rockets, to replace Bob Ociepka, who has joined the Chicago Bulls staff. "He's been with the Rockets over the last nine years and was on the bench with Rudy Tomjanovich when Rudy was their head coach there," Witt-man said. "These last couple of years before the draft, we did combine workouts with Houston to look at players. He can really get on the floor and teach, and that's going to be important for us."
The Timberwolves will be better than they were a season ago. Of course, the truth is it would be hard to be much worse. The team took a risk by giving up Mayo for Kevin Love, but Love looked very good in summer league. That said, Love is not a go to guy and the Wolves will need to acquire complimentary pieces around him as the years go by. Al Jefferson is a stud and will be a very good player in the NBA for a long, long time. The guy who really needs to stay healthy and step up next season is Randy Foye.
Rashad McCants Shoot for the Cure half-court shot contest was running behind schedule this afternoon.
McCants came out and spoke to the crowd around 3:50 p.m. and then an
announcement was made that the contest wouldn’t start for another 15-20
minutes. The contestants all let out a collective groan when the
announcement was made. No reason was given.
The event was to begin at 3:30. The winner will receive $10,000 in
prize money. The contest was started by McCants in order to raise money
for Feed the Children and Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Western North
Carolina.

The Telfair signing feels like a rare bit of good news for those hoping
Rashad McCants doesn't get lost in the personnel shuffle. Bassy and
Shaddy always felt like a complementary backcourt duo, and sure enough,
Telfair's plus/minus numbers with McCants are easily better than with
anyone else on the perimeter. The Wolves averaged 93 points per 48 with
Telfair last season, but that number jumped to 100 pp48 when McCants
was riding shotgunner on the wing, without inflating the 103 pp48 the
Wolves ceded on D in Telfair's minutes. One hopes that Foye is paired
in the starting lineup with Mike Miller and that Telfair and Shaddy
come in together.
-Kevin Love, the Timberwolves' top draft, whose uncle is Mike Love of the Beach Boys, said "California Girls" is Mike's favorite Beach Boys song.
-Don't be surprised if the Timberwolves add point guard John Lucas to their training camp roster.

Financial details of Gomes' contract were not known, but it is believed
to be for at least three seasons. The Wolves had the right to match any
offer Gomes received from another team.
Last week, the Wolves signed Smith, 24, to a two-year, $4.8 million
contract. Wednesday, they finalized a contract with Telfair that will
pay the 23-year-old $2.3 million next season and $2.5 million in
2009-10; Telfair has the option to return for a third season for $2.7
million...
The Wolves also are expected to announce the hiring early next week of
assistant coach Dean Cooper, the Houston Rockets' vice president of
basketball operations last season. Cooper will replace Bob Ociepka, who
joined new Chicago Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro's staff.
Jessica Camerato/Hoopsworld lists Corey Brewer as one of the second year players who "needs to worry after their summer league performances "
Corey Brewer needed to redeem himself at the Las Vegas Summer League. It didn't happen. Brewer came into the NBA with high expectations as a defensive specialist with a reliable offensive game but failed to make an impact on the Minnesota Timberwolves during his rookie season. His struggles continued in Vegas as he was inconsistent at the basket, knocking down 19 points one game and a single free throw the next. He capped off summer league with a strong performance (he averaged 9.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in five games) but the athletic forward is still a long way from reaching his potential.
The former Erwin High and North Carolina standout came out for his
annual Shoot for the Cure event Friday afternoon. The Asheville native
and current Minnesota Timberwolves player brought a small entourage of
family and friends and a stack of photos to sign. Just a few yards in
front of him, youths shot at a pair of basketball goals that could end
up rewarding a contestant with $10,000.
“I love coming back to Asheville for Bele Chere,” said McCants, whose
Shoot for the Cure tournament wraps Sunday afternoon. “I’m excited that
this year we’re able to help local families with Feed the Children.”
POPS Mensah-Bonsu has rejected Badalona's contract offer and is in talks with four NBA teams.
Pops Mensah-Bonsu, the Great Britain forward, has turned
down a lucrative deal with Badalona, the Spanish side, after opening talks
with four NBA clubs. The 6ft 9in Londoner, 24, was offered a £670,000,
one-year contract after performing well in Italy with Benetton Treviso last
season.
But he impressed the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA summer league in Las
Vegas last week and has opened talks.

From Jerry Zgoda/Star Tribune:
"Three for three: Ryan Gomes became the third Wolves’ free agent in eight days to agree to a new contract when he and his agent did so on Friday to a multi-year contract.
I probably won’t track down the financial nitty gritty until after the weekend, but I’m pretty sure the contract is for at least three years and it conditionally might be another couple years longer than that."
From Marc Stein/ESPN.com:
"The Minnesota Timberwolves' post-Kevin Garnett frontcourt continued to take shape Friday when they reached terms on a new contract with restricted free agent Ryan Gomes.
Gomes' agent, Bob Myers, told ESPN.com that the sides have agreed in principal on a "multiyear deal" that is expected to be formally signed next week. Terms were not immediately available, but Gomes will soon join forward Craig Smith and guard Sebastian Telfair as players re-signed by the Wolves this month."

After one of the workouts in the Wolves' practice facility in the
basement of Target Center, some of the Rockets officials noticed a
handful of older players gathering on the side - waiting to take the
court.
"The Houston people came up here and were absolutely startled," McHale said.
Jefferson, Foye, McCants, Brewer and Chris Richard were among those present.
"There were like six, seven guys getting ready to work out," McHale
said. "They were like, 'What are these guys doing?' And I said, 'Oh,
they work out after our workout with the young guys.' They said,
'You've got to be kidding me. You've got that many guys in?' I said,
'Yeah, most of the team will be in here in August.'"
But despite the disappointment of his first four years, the 23-year-old
appears to finally be settling in with the T-Wolves, who inked him to a
multi-year deal (terms of which were not released) this week.
“Sebastian’s intention from Day One was to be back with the
Timberwolves,” said Telfair’s agent, Andy Miller. “He feels that
they’ve given him a second chance, and he wants to repay them by
developing under their tutelage.”
More than 30 of the NBA's members of the rookie class of 2008-09
will get their first taste of national marketing next week when
they converge for the league's official rookie photo shoot.
The event, scheduled for July 29 at the MSG Training Facility in
Tarrytown, N.Y., will feature such NBA marketing partners as
adidas, EA Sports, Topps and Upper Deck. Among the top rookies who
will participate in the day of promos, photography and other
marketing efforts are the top three picks from the June draft:
Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls), Michael Beasley, (Miami Heat) and
O.J. Mayo (Memphis Grizzlies). Others include Brook Lopez (New
Jersey Nets), Kevin Love (Minnesota Timberwolves)) and Eric Gordon
(Los Angeles Clippers).
Before hitting the links in Brainerd, Jim Petersen and Mike Trudell
talked about another successful U.S. Bank Caravan, trying to beat Fred
Hoiberg at golf and who could beat Kobe and Duncan in 2-on-2...
Another highlight: Former Erwin High and UNC basketball standout Rashad
McCants is making a return to Bele Chere as he appears in the second
annual “Shoot for a Cure” tournament.
McCants, now a member of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves, will emcee
the event, wherein participants pay $2 for a half-court shot and a
chance to win $10,000. There is a five-shot maximum.

Interestingly, Gomes has yet to sign the contract tender extended by
the Wolves as he and his agent do their due diligence in exploring the
market ... Yet he's is on the Caravan? That's just how the former
Boston Celtics' Community star of the year rolls.
"To show you the type of person he is, Ryan is on the Minnesota
Timberwolves Caravan and he's not even under contract," said Wolves VP
of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale at Wednesday's Wolves press
conference. "I can tell you, there are very few people that would be
doing that. That's another reason why we're very fond of these guys and
think they're special kids."
Kevin Love may have been a top five pick, but the Minnesota Timberwolves got a steal when they acquired him from the Memphis Grizzlies on Draft Night. Love knew his conditioning was under fire when he came to Las Vegas, so he dropped the pounds and picked up his game. He was in noticeably better shape and got up and down both ends of the court to impress on offense and defense. Love averaged 18 points and 13.5 rebounds while shooting nearly 50% from the field. After posting 26 points and 15 rebounds against the Portland Trail Blazers, it was clear Love could have gone earlier in the draft and the T'Wolves had played their hand successfully.
Minnesota Timberwolves Guard and Erwin High School graduate Rashad
McCants teams with international hunger relief organization Feed The
Children to provide 400 North Carolina families with boxes of food and
personal care items at 10 a.m. Monday in the Sam's Club parking lot,
645 Patton Ave.

Ok, here they are: Sebastian Telfair’s three-year deal is worth $7.5
million and breaks down this way: $2.3 million this coming season, $2.5
million in 2009-2010 and he has the option to come back in 2010-2011
for $2.7 million. Craig Smith signed a two-year deal worth $4.8 million
that will pay him $2.3 million and $2.5 million a season.
