Kevin Garnett: Too Far? E-mail

With KG getting injured and falling on the way to the tunnel due to pain, only to make a late-game return, I knew we were potentially due for another WWF-esque moment from the Big Ticket.  I was really hoping to see him raise his arms as he entered and get the crowd going nuts. It's absolutely incredible when he gets them going like that, even if it does get the home crowd rallied up against my own team.

Instead, we were "treated" to KG's tirade at the end of the game in which he popped out his jersey to display "Celtics" and kept repeating "This is what I'm talking about Motherf***ers!"

I have to admit, I love it when KG goes bonkers, but tonight I found it a little tough to swallow. It seemed to me that his actions were a little insulting to the Wolves organization. The way he clearly pointed out "Celtics" over and over again made it appear that he was driving home the message that the C's are so much better than the Timberwolves.

Trying to take a more objective look, Garnett was at home and was celebrating in front of the Boston fans. His actions could just be his way of saying "I'm happy to be here, to be a part of this organization, etc." But in the back of my mind, it still just seemed like there was a little bit of anti-Wolves sentiment there as well.  I've seen him do the jersey pop before, but this one just seemed a little more enthusiastic, a little longer, and thus, a little more deliberate.

Trust me, KG has every reason to want to stick it to McHale, Taylor, and whoever else put him through twelve years of hell with their bad management decisions. I would just like to think that Kevin would also remember that there's thousands and thousands of Timberwolves fans who still support him just as strongly as ever.  We treat him as if he were still one of our own.  When he went down in the 4th quarter with the abdominal strain, it never crossed my mind to think "Yes!  We have a better shot of winning!".  Instead, I was annoyed with the Wolves as if they'd just injured one of their own teammates.

Through location, loyalty, or a twisted gluttony for punishment, we're all still following and supporting the Wolves in Garnett's absence.  Because of that, any action he does to insult the organization can be taken as an insult to us.  Truth be told, as much as I consider him to still be "one of us", he's really not.  The fans on this site and I can take our shots at the team because it's "our" team.  Anything negative we say is out of love coupled with frustration, and at the end of the day we still bleed for this organziation.  Garnett doesn't have that relationship any more and every move he made last night was going to come under major scrutiny.  I just wish he'd been a litte more careful, and, without sounding like a total wuss, a little more sensitive to the people he left behind.

Again, the game was in Boston and he was celebrating with the Boston fans.  It's not far-fetched to think that he got caught up in the moment and forgot about the thousands in the Midwest who were watching him over the television.  After twelve seasons of doing the incredible for us, I'm more than willing to give KG a pass on this one.  I just seriously hope we don't see anything similar when the Ticket comes back to the Target Center, because that would simply be inexcusable.

My final word of advice to KG would be this - if you're going to pull out a WWF move on February 8th, make it this one:  Act like you're going to run up to Al Jefferson and clock him in the face, and then instead raise his arm into the air as a sign of solidarity with your long-time fans and the players they now support in your absence.

Trust me, the crowd will love it!

Personally, I find that picture interesting.....you see Al in the background hugging a celtics player?

A true example of CLASS vs. CLASSLESS if ever I did see one...

I liked KG when he was with the Wolves, and I don't hate him now. But since he left, he has become a different person, someone I don't admire as much as I once did.

This was classless, along with everything he was saying to Al when free throws were being shot.

Good article Derok. I agree that I probably give KG a pass on this too (for the most part.) The unsettling thing is the way the entire team celebrated. I mean, you guys beat the team with the worst record in the league. C'mon...

P.S. Thanks for pointing out Al in the background. I'm a huge Al fan and it's awesome to see how classy he truly is.

it had nothing to do with classy vs. classless

Kendrick Perkins and Al Jefferson are best friends. Al is Perk's son's godfather. Of course they're gonna give each other a big hug. I don't think people understood how much it meant to KG. He treats every game the same. It doesn't matter who you are.

I think the thing that ticked me off the most about KG's performance was that he downplayed the matchup before the game, didn't perform particularly well during the game, and then acted like an idiot after the game. Contrast that to some of the things Big Al said about coming back to Boston and it becomes even more apparent that KG was completely classless.

I liked KG a lot while he was here. But he was never my favorite player because of crap he did to players like Pryzbilla; it never made sense to me...the guy was a top 5 player and he would wig out when faced up against certain competition. It happened again this year against Portland, the Knicks and now the Wolves.

I think the most telling thing was Kendrick Perkins' face at the free throw line when KG started talking shit at Big Al. He knew it was tasteless and classless, especially against someone like Jefferson.

I've always been one of those fans who thought the trade was a terrible idea. After seeing how classy Big Al is (not to mention his play on the offensive end), seeing how good of a glue-guy Gomes is, and seeing Bassy improve, I'm fine with him being gone. The only thing I could think about last night was, "God, did he act like that the entire time he was here and I just didn't pay attention to it?"

SNP I loved your assessment. However, I think KG had a right to celebrate. Dude came back from a 4th quarter injury and helped win the game. His seeming disinterest in the matchup before the game bothered me. Though I was super pissed when he started celebrating, it also made me nostalgic for his passion during games as a Timberwolves player. It would be hypocritical of me to think it was an unclassy move as if he\'d been on the Wolves, I would have enjoyed every second of it.

Some good comments to this article. I find myself agreeing with different parts of everyone's posts. I don't think any of us are wrong or right. I also agree that I would have been cheering right along with KG if this happened when he was still on the Wolves.

If anything, I'm just slightly mad about their entire team celebrating as if they won the title.

He was just celebrating a win. Its a little over the top the way the celtics as a team celebrate. But I hope its the same way 3 years from when the timberwolves are wining.

I guess the reason I go with classless is the juxtaposition between KG and Big Al. If you go read some of the Boston media's articles about how Big Al handled everything and then watch KG drop a few f-bombs on Big Al...well, as a T-Wolves fan, I don't care if KG thinks its not about Wolves fans; there's only so much of the nonsense I'm going to take moving forward with guys we're supposed to be rebuilding with. It's almost like dealing with a girlfriend with an ex that used to be your friend. Yeah, you used to hang and he was cool to you, but the more he makes things about your new life, the more you tend to view him as someone you're glad is no longer around.

Yeah but KG is known for trash talking his opponents. At least while he was in MN, he'd drop f-bombs even before tip off. He probably said the same stuff to Seattle and Portland that he supposedly said to Al last night.

Al may be just as passionate as Garnett, but KG is definitely more demonstrative. I can't imagine Al celebrating the way KG did but that's because it doesn't seem in his nature. True, that could change if he plays for a winning team.

Also, I like the girlfriend/ex analogy.

I really wasn't upset about the excessive celebration. I guess you can say that when the best team in the league defeats the worst, they should have a little poise and act "like they've been here before". However, those guys had to know it was a big game for KG and were probably pumped for him. Also they were pretty lucky to pull off the win, which probably added to their emotion. Lastly, the C's are simply an emotional team that feeds of KG's energy. They act like that almost every night.

Even the KG trash talk during the game didn't bother me. That's just how KG plays. It's usually nothing personal. Sometimes he gets into it with guys but that's a byproduct of his intensity. Sometimes you have to take the good with the bad when you have a player that's worked up as much as he is. I don't think his jawing with Al was personal. I mean, if you look down a post or two below this there was a quote about how Al called KG a motherf***** right back. I think most of it is just how these guys talk.

Really, it was just that KG's celebration seemed to be that extra bit deliberate that bothered me. I don't like him any less for it, I just sincerely hope he leaves it in Boston and shows the fans some love when he comes back to town. Knowing KG, I'm sure he will.
