Details of Gomes Contract 1 Month ago Howls: 21
From StarTrib:

"Here’s the deal on the deal: Officially, it’s for five years, although the Wolves have options after the second and third years and Gomes has the option after the fourth year. So the first two years are guaranteed, at $3.5 million next season and $3.8 million in 2009-2010. His salary jumps above $4 million after that if the team exercises its option. If Gomes remains a Timberwolf for all five seasons, the contract will approach $22 million.

"If the Wolves want to clear more cap room for the 2010 free agent class, they could decide not to pick up Gomes’ option that summer and he’d become an unrestricted free agent."

Seems like a good deal for both sides. Affords the Wolves cap flexibility. I like it.

I agree, SnP added Gomes' deal to his payroll but didn;t add that Wolves hold team options on the third and fourth years. Looks almost like a rookie deal, lol.

Yeah you are right... it looks exactly like a contract you'd get being drafted #3-5.

This is a fantastic deal for the Wolves. I would have thought the wolves would have needed to concede $5 million plus in the 4,5 years to get the team options after years 2 and 3.

It's weird. The CBA is pushing down value for mid range players while the restricted free agent tag makes it even more prohibitive for other teams to increase the amount of competition that would drive the market upwards. It will be interesting to see how the Euro League continues to affect this situation.

PS: Speaking of the Euros, look who is playing in the Olympics:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain_national_basketball_team#2008_Olympic_tournament_roster

Will Rubio get some burn over Calderon? I can't believe a 17 year old kid is playing on that stacked team. If he were from the US, he'd be on the cover of SI and they'd play his HS games on ESPN. If he does ANYTHING against the US team, his stock will absolutely blow up. Of course, he could play 8 minutes/game and get nowhere. It will be interesting to see. That Spanish team is stacked. Both Gasols, Fernandez, Calderon, and Navarro. If they get hot from 3, they could beat anybody.

Brilliant strategy on the Wolves part...resign a very productive role player at reasonable salary and create the salary cap flexibility 2 and 3 years from now.

I'm a huge Ricky Rubio fan, but I think he's gonna find it tough going against the US. Deron Williams is probably the worst matchup for him at PG in the entire world. Chris Paul isn't far behind. I don't think he'll play well, but it will in no way be indicative of his future success in the NBA.

It will definitely be tough. However, he's frickin' 17. I still can't believe a kid that young is playing on a national team as good as Spain's.

Great deal for both sides. Maybe the haters can shut up now about the Wolves signing Gomes... especially since everyone was spouting off before they even knew the exact details of the contract.

It's like the NBA is in some alternate dimension. Gomes is one of the hardworking guys that will rarely ever burn you on a longterm contract unless a devastating injury comes along. He gets team options in the middle of the contract while the lazy guys get a guaranteed 5 years and don't live up to it.

This is absolutely the best deal I could ever imagine the wolves to have done to re-sign Gomes.

This is a great deal for the Wolves. Gomes is not only an up and coming productive player, but he just seems like a nice guy in general. I mean he was traveling with the team van to Mankato and around the state when he wasn't even resigned by the Wolves yet! I couldn't name many players in any sport that would do that for the community and team.

That is a staggeringly good deal. Very impressive work, particularly the team options.

Which streak will end first... Ron Artest acting like a sane person or Kevin McHale acting like a good GM. If I was betting I'd say Ron Artest breaks down first... but that is mostly because Kevin doesn't have a ton to do for almost 6 months.

This contract speaks as much about Ryan Gomes as it does the front office. He is willing to invest his future with the TWolves and earn the big money after the second year. Both he and Al Jefferson have reached out to the T Wolves by accepting owner friendly contracts. So much is said about what a shyt hole Minnesota is due to incompetent ownership, management and coaching. Aparently Al and Ryan see it differently. Everyone has come to the conclusion that no super star will sign with us in 2010 either for the same reason coupled with the fact that Minnesota is cold. I don't believe that to be true either. I think the average NBA player just wants to be successful, appreciated, rich and a be a part of a winning team.

Looking back on the Garnett trade, even I, the biggest of Garnett fans, have to say that we came out pretty well. We could've potentially lost KG for nothing this summer. Instead, we got a 20/10 guy with a great attitude who signed a less than max contract and promises to be a cornerstone for the next decade, as well as two solid, young, high character role players with potential, who wanted to stay with the squad in the future, and were re-signed to multi-year deals of reasonable value. Looks pretty good.

And the first round pick that we haven't used yet. And ours back!

Who knows what we'll do with those two picks... but better to have them than to not. Hopefully add them with someone like McCants or Smith in a future trade.

Re:Details of Gomes Contract 1 Month ago Howls: 43
I remember listening to Barrerio that evening on the FAN. He ofcourse thought it was a horrible deal.

Here is what his take and the general media take was. Jefferson was key but has had injury issues, Telfair would likely be cut before the season, Gomes was a nice player but nothing special and Gerald Green had no basketball IQ but he has the talent to be a star.

All the callers were so wooded up about Green.

Amazing how much changes in a year. This time last year the Bulls were supposed to be in the top 2 in the league not drafting in the top 2.
