Wow. And they got the money from the rest of the MLE that Jones didn't use up. OK, double it for Livingston and call it a day. $1.4 and 3.8 with a team option on year 3 as well as the right to match should anything come out of his rehab. That would put the Wolves at $69.1 in 08 and 47.5 in 09. If he can play again, great. If not, they're still in the game as far as 09/10 free agency goes and they can pick up a future Chris Richard with very little problem. What's Kris Lang doing these days? David Padgett? Did he get picked up by Miami too?

ok, ok, ok. jumped the shark? c'mon...

a clarification:

'free agents to-be' should have included the caveat -- summers of '09 and '10 -- what free agents could anyone possibly be talking about signing this year? (josh smith?!) reclamation projects and re-treads are all that's left, that's twins territory.

my tangent: how about exploring the trade of rashad and craig (still possible with meniscus surgery?) or richard for your 3rd point and a long, athletic, defensive-minded big in marko belinelli and brandon wright?

so you relieve my hysterics a bit when you say how low the offer for livingston should be. i don't even want to give the guy half the MLE, cuz it would take cap space away from, wait for it... one of the free agents in '09 or '10.

what kind of player would it be eating up our cap space up? who are the brands, barons, and marions we're gonna be hoping opt-out and be fishing for next summer or the year after? joe johnson?

As a quick aside: welcome to the thread.

We've had several free agent threads in here. I think the last one was under the tag "2009".

The "big" free agents we might be hoping for in 2009 are Granger (impossible to offer something they don't match), Deng (already off the list) and the last one in Marvin Williams. If Hawks sign Josh Smith, and sign JJ next year, there's a chance they won't match a offer starting ar around 10 million for Marvin.

And stop the hate on him, he would fit great here as a SF.

I'd take Gomes over starvin' Marvin any day.

If only there were a way to get Wright, M. Williams, and Felton. It could be the all-UNC underachieving team.

How about we add Traijon Langton, JJ Redick and Sheldon Williams to the mix and hold a battle royal?

Gomes over Williams? In all seriousness, what's wrong with starvin' Marvin? He can score, is not a bad defender, gets a couple of rebounds and generally is the dynamic slasher that would fit nicely next to Big Al down low and our shooters on the outside. *shrugs*

I agree, he may not be worth 10million to start with.

So, who do you see there for us in 2009? Because I doubt any good FA's will be left on the market in 2010 when agents start returning T'Wolves calls.

Re:Livingston dream is dying 3 Weeks, 4 Days ago Howls: 27
The Wolves only hope is that they end up as the last team standing with money on the books and enough small-change assets to throw at someone in a sign and trade for a restricted free agent. This team is not going to get built with big name free agents. It's simply not going to happen. The free agents they will be able to land are the max MLE type of guys like Pryz or Jason Maxiell. Danny Granger and Josh Smith would be ideal but with Smith you have to hope he signs a 1 year tender and with Granger you will likely have to put together a sign and trade. The Wolves are not going to be big players in 2010 for the top-rate talent. They're going to try and bring Pekovic over as well as extending Foye and/or McCants and they probably already extended an MLE or more in 09.

The biggest event in all of this rebuilding comes on draft day 2009. If they can enter the day with 4 1st rounders, a couple of 2nds, and a bunch of short, movable contracts, they could either fill out their roster with good young talent or trade for "the missing piece".

Re:Livingston dream is dying 3 Weeks, 4 Days ago Howls: 54
Joe Johnson.

I think he could be obtainable, and I think he'd make a huge, huge difference on this team. If we can get ourselves a good PG like Rubio in the draft and Pekovic comes over...

PG: Rubio/Foye/Telfair
SG: Joe/Foye/McCants
SF: Miller/Gomes/Brewer
PF: Jefferson/Love/Gomes
C: Pekovic/Jefferson/Love

That's a solid, solid rotation, and very, very doable.

Getting Rubio or another good young PG shouldn't be hard considering all the picks we'll likely have in the draft. Hopefully Pekovic comes over - that's not too far fetched. Miller needs to be resigned to a reasonable deal - not far fetched considering he'll be older and this is home for him. And Joe Johnson just has to take a max contract.

That's a team that could compete for a championship in 2011 or 2012.

It will be very interesting to see how well Curry plays the point this year at Davidson. I'm really hoping that he finds his way to the Wolves.

Me as well. No point in overpaying him when we already have Gomes locked up on the cheap.

I agree that is probably our best and most realistic chance of winning a title. It's going to be tough though because we need all those 3 things to work perfectly

1. Get a top PG in next year's draft
2. Sign Joe Johnson
3. Pekovic comes over and has to be everything they expected him to be

It's possible. I'd feel better about our chances if we traded our front office to the Blazers for theirs.

Chuck Norris won by 5.

Re:Livingston dream is dying 3 Weeks, 4 Days ago Howls: 9
Ok. So how about we explore this subject. "Trade for Joe Johnson". Obviosuly, not now, since the Hawks want to ride Bibby's last season and see "What They Can Do" with Bibby/JJ/Marv/J-Smoove/horford assuming Josh Smith is there... or they trade him for a different PF -> Odom, Al Harrington? Doesn't matter, that's still a damn nice team in the East, capable of finishing behind Boston, Philly and Detroit.

But what if they suck and by mid-season they're locked up in a dog fight for the final 2 playoff seeds, chemistry is bad, Sund wants to show that he can turn it around.

So... JJ earns 14million this season, almost 15 the next.

Joe Johnson
Solomon Jones/Randolph Morris (minimum salary exception)

for

Randy Foye
Rashad McCants
Brian Cardinal
+
(we still need ~1 million in salary, Carney/Booth?)

Hawks cut costs, get plugged with young talent ready to contribute and swap Johnson's 14 million for Cardinal's 7, so they can again be big players in the 2009 free agency (they drop like 25mill in salary in swapping JJ for Cardinal, next Bibby and Zaza going off the books) and if they stand pat, even bigger in 2010.

Bassy Telfair
Joe Johnson
Mike Miller
Kevin Love
Al Jefferson

and 2-4 first round picks which might be enough to trade into the top 5 and pick a PG like Rubio or Evans or Jennings.

Bah, far fetched.

If Curry has the speed he'll be a good NBA player. The last guy who was really lauded as a great shooter in college was JJ Redick (stats here) he was doing it surrounded by players keeping the double teams off. Curry has never had that luxory. I don't believe Redick's failing as a pro were a result of his not having the talent. Also he did lift his team up in the NCAA tourney like Curry did (sense of entitlement perhaps).

I'm not sold on Curry quite yet. I'll need to see more of him this year. There are a bunch of guys I'd rather have... but I guess it depends on where our pick ends up.
