We all made money, which means we're automatically in the positive. You can never go negative with the straight or spread picks. The big question each week is whether the money picks are going erase the points you earned from your other picks or add to them.

I guess I'll have to hang my hat on the fact that I have the best percentages for the overall straight and spread picks.

The thing about playing the spreads is that you're in a 10% hole every time you lose. So to just break even playing the spreads on every game for the same amount of money, you'd have to be 81-72-7. Pretty tough to do, and even if you go, say, 86-67-7 which would be absolutely amazing, you'll only have won $1,230 after betting an enormous $16,000. That's a lot of cash to risk to win such a small amount.

That's why the only way to win some real money is to pick and chose your games and spread out the money based on the most likely teams to win. Obviously none of us are too good at that based on our results. But to me, being able to do that is the sign of a good prognosticator, as the Sports Gal can come up with a good record picking randomly.

Great points. Probably a good thing that I haven't bet any actual real money on the NFL this year. I still think it's the hardest of all sports (counting college) to do well gambling on. It's just soooo hard to predict, and the majority of the teams are incredibly even in terms of talent.

I wonder if the Sports Gal really does just pick randomly... or maybe she actually likes and watches football? Do you think Simmons just makes up this stuff about her not caring and picking randomly so that it's funnier and can make jokes about it? I could see it either way. Just thinking to myself, of all the girls I know... I would say that football is collectively the most followed and/or watched sport.
