In an effort to stop the spamming that's been going on lately, I am going to temporarily allow "guest" posting which will cause a security code to appear whenever a non-registered user tries to post on this board. Hopefully this will put an end to the spamming. If it does, then guest posting will become a permanent feature.

So if you're a lurker out there, you can now add your two cents to a discussion without officially creating an account. However, to have your stats tracked and gain some credibility by being a bonafide member of our community, I would encourage you to register.

In addition, everyone will be required to supply an email address when posting. If you're registered, this shows up automatically and you won't have to do anything extra, which is also another benefit of actually registering I'm not going to do anything funky with anyone's email and if you don't believe me, I'm pretty sure it will work if you supply a bogus one. It really makes no difference to me. I'm just trying to make things as complicated as I can for spam robots.

I'm curious... If the spammers are currently registering accounts right now to do their nefarious deeds, why would enabling guest posting ( but making it difficult ) stop them?

yeah, I know it doesn't make sense, but currently the spammers were just overriding the "registered only" rule. They weren't registering and just posting anyway. I was wondering if enabling guest posting which would bump up the spam protection would keep them away.

Obviously that didn't work... Back to registered only!

I don't know whether it's possible to transfer a FireBoard (what you are using) database into a phpBB2 (or 3) one... but phpBB is far, far safer. The coding is not better, but it has lots of anti-spambots modifications on the web ready to be installed.

I'm pretty sure you can't transfer FireBoard to phpBB. I liked using this board since it's 100% integrated into the site. We used to run phpBB but you needed two different logins for the main site and the forum. We had our fair share of spam with phpBB as well as CW can attest. It just wasn't this constant barrage from once source that we seem to have now. If I could figure out a way to stop this current attack, I can deal with the occasional random post that slips through.

Ugh yeah, the attacks on the old board were awful! I think that was definitely worse...

I think I may have found something to fix this finally. The NFL and Help forums are unlocked. Here we go...

You now have to enter 5 characters from an image after every post. I'd recommend trying your best to remember to save your post because I just got owned by getting a random one that was hard to do and guessing wrong.

If it gets rid of the spam I'll take my lumps.
