I remember when I collected basketball cards that I at one point, got three Greg Buckner's in 3 straight packs. The exact same card everytime. I remember my response as well, \"Who the **** wants Greg Buckner cards?!\" Then i would run into my room and cry until my mom bought me another pack...this was last year... B)

Question: "Hey Antoine Walker, why do you shoot so many 3's?"

Answer: "Because there are no 4's."

I wish I would have gotten Ryan Gomes in every pack I bought. Then again, the last time I was buying basketball cards was long before Gomes entered the league... shucks. :(

I used to collect Hakeem Olajuwan cards. I have around 130-140 of them. I liked how the really early ones have his name as \"Akeem\". I distincly remember trading a couple of Jordans for a bunch of Hakeems once though - that was dumb. I have now started 5 sentences in a row with \"I\".

\"I\" am so proud of your Akeem collection. \"I\" have several Akeem cards in addition to Hakeem.

P.S. He is the best center of all time.

LOL! Nice...

I was poor and had to steal all my packs of cards. Then I would sell them to my friends so I could afford a bite to eat that night...I felt like an even nerdier version of Aladin, sans Abu.

Rik Smits is the dopest NBA player of all time. I have played basketball against him before. He blocked me very very badly.

What happened to trading cards? I don't think that us all getting older is what made them fall out of popularity. I remember there were plenty of 30 and 40 year old guys who used to hang out at the card shops when I was 12. Now you never hear anything about them.

I think what might have done them in is all the \"special cards\". Back in the day you just had regular cards, and that was it. Then there would be a special set of 5 holograms that would be two to a box and those were worth more cash. Pretty soon you were getting a \"special\" card in every pack, which made them a lot less special. Eventually things got to the point that there were 50 million \"game used jersey\", \"game used floor\" or whatever cards to the point where they were as common as a regular card adn it just got dumb.

That's exactly right. \"Old\" people still are HUGE collectors. Inserts and prices of the packs/boxes are what has ruined it for the common kids. A shame. I still have like 20,000 cards all sorted and boxed according the years/sets that they are from. All my expensive ones are in cases seperately though. Wonder what I could do to sell them... or maybe just keep them for another 30 years?

The only basketball trading cards I own is the small series of cards that were included in the mid-nineties in Kellogg's serials for a few months. That was the time B-Ball really got more popular here in Germany and I guess they tried to get this stuff established here. But it never worked out...

I'm not saying that no one ever bought a pack of cards (I didn't, because I was more into collectible card games. With NBA cards you can't even play - how boring *g*) or that there weren't some hardcore collectors here, but it never got any widespread attention, not even among B-Ball fans.

But we do have our own tradition here in Germany for collecting useless, sports-related packs of collectible items: Soccer-Stickers! This has been a tradition for generations of youngsters - the tradition has it roots in 1890 - to spend their allowance on every new edition of stickers that is released every new season. There is always an accompanying sticker book where you can put your stickers sorted after teams, situations and whatever the designers have thought of this year. Although I do believe that the stuff does not sell as good today as it has in my youth, it is still widespread and you can leave a huge impression to any guy your age by stating you had the soccer albums of '86 - '92 fully complete.

But there is always the possibility to cheat, making this less of an accomplishment. When buying the closed and randomly assembled sticker packs there are always some few stickers that seem to evade you, no matter how many packs you buy, although there is supposedly no distinction between common, uncommon and rare stickers (mostly around 300-400 per series). And if you could not trade for the missing pieces with your buddies, you could always just order them at the publisher for a few cents per sticker. That of course makes it necessary to claim that you have completed the album without ordering any stickers at the publisher if you want to impress anyone.

I would also like to add, that there are always other sticker collections based on the same system (300-400 stickers in closed packs, cheaply sold sticker album) themed with popular cartoon series, recent movies, animals or whatever might catch the kids' interest. But the soccer albums always had the most success, which might come at no surprise if you consider how incredible popular soccer is in Germany.

I have 60+ Jerry Rice Cards in mint condition. I'll probably never get rid of them. I don't know where the rest of my cards are.

Another reason that sports cards are losing out with the youth of today would be games like Pokemon and Yu-gi-oh which also have cards. When the kid has the choice between the two they will probably choose what their friends have and what they can play with.

Seriously? Awesome!!!!

Jerry Rice is my all-time favorite football player ever. I had like 230 different cards of his last time I counted. I've got his Rookie Card, which is the prize of my collection. I've also got his autograph from when I sent him a letter when I was like 10 years old...
