Timberwolves guard J.J. Barea was expecting some consideration from the NBA on Tuesday, March 5, and he got it.
The NBA reduced his Flagrant Foul 2 penalty to a Flagrant Foul 1 after reviewing his run-in Monday night with Miami Heat guard Ray Allen in the fourth quarter of Miami's 97-81 victory at Target Center. After Monday's game, Barea expressed confidence that the league would see his side of the situation and downgrade the penalty.
"The NBA did a good job of making sure it wasn't that bad," Barea said after Tuesday's practice. "I would have liked to finish the game. That's the frustrating part."
A player assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 is automatically ejected. Reducing Barea's penalty to a Flagrant Foul 1 reduces Barea's total in the NBA's point system for flagrant fouls. The league issues players one point for Flagrant 1 penalties and two points for a Flagrant 2.
Players reaching five points in flagrant fouls are subject to fines and game suspensions without pay. Barea has just the one point.
Allen went after Barea when Barea "bumped" him to the floor on a drive to the basket with 8:09 left in the fourth quarter. Barea admitted he retaliated after Allen pushed off against him but was not called for a foul. Barea said Allen struck him near his neck while he was dribbling. The two players had to be separated after Barea's foul but no punches were thrown.
Barea was informed of the league's ruling after practice by Wolves president of basketball operations David Kahn. Barea had a light-hearted response about his ejection.
"The way I was shooting it, 'Get me out of here'," Barea said smiling. "They did me a favor."
Barea was 1 for 11 shooting, including 0 for 2 in the fourth quarter, when he was ejected. He finished with four points.
