In this case I think it's just a coincidence but a lot of times in hockey and sometimes in baseball the entire team will grow beards as a sign of camaraderie and also has to do with superstition. Especially in hockey, it's pretty common for the entire team to grow out their beards and then they don't trim them until they are eliminated from the playoffs.
