You know, I never had any particular strong feelings about Portland prior to this, but unless I'm only getting half the story, this whole affair makes them look like petty douchebags.
After screwing us in the Martell deal, you'd think just maybe they'd want to save some face. They can whine about being on the hook for Roy but as someone else pointed out, anyone else could have signed him too. But it seems like we could have offered them anything under the sun for Batum and they would have matched. I almost wish we'd offered him even MORE money since it's obviously not just about retaining a good player for them. They knew they were going to match, so the only reason to wait until the last minute is to make life harder for the Wolves, so I'm going have a hard time not rooting against them in the future.
I can understand wanting to screw some team that's already big and powerful and lucky, but this is like picking on the weakest kid in school whose parents were killed in a freak accident. I'd expect that kind of egocentric dickishness from David Stern, The Worst Commissioner In Sports, but don't you think other teams are going to be wary of dealing with them after seeing the kind of crap they're pulling?
I hope Batum just goes through the motions for them now. I mean, he couldn't have made it more clear that he didn't want to stay. If they thought it was too much, then it really becomes obvious that it was a grudge match more than as a smart move for the team.
Either way, if there is a God, he sure is not a T-Wolves fan.
Screw Portland. Those games I'm looking forward to the most next season. I'm out for blood
