Was the final score about what the game looked like? Or was it never really close/competitive and we came back at the end or anything?
Wolves played very well in the first. Second qtr was a little frustrating as they struggled on offense and got outscored 31-22. But with the previous lead we still were at 49-49 until Chalmers hit a 3 pointer at the buzzer. They definitely had the momentum going into the half.
3rd qtr was interesting. We came out battling and didn't let them take off. The key was Shved took over the playmaking and kept them in it. He had 4 assists in a row and we were up 61-59.
That was huge because you could see the tide wanted to turn in their favor, especially as the refs started calling the game in their favor. Love had gotten the calls in the first half to get 3 on Bosh and Haslem. There probably was a lot of halftime, "How can you call fouls on us?!" whining by the Heat. There were times in that 3rd quarter when Love was getting fouled and they wouldn't call it. Love struggled again in the 2nd half, but some of that was that he couldn't get anything going thru the no calls. Meanwhile, he picked up 3 quick ones on the other end!
So...Shved was leading us, but he had to guard Wade. Which was too much for him, and pretty hard to figure out for him. Remember the Boston game? The D got so physical on him and took him out of the game. When he tries to play the same way, he gets called for a foul. But that doesn't bother me as much as when he picks a position, stands with his arms in the air and then Wade goes up, makes some stupid flailing motion like he got fouled (when he didn't) and the refs let him get away with it by calling fouls. And that is what happened, Shved ended up with 4 fouls and had to go to the bench with 7 minutes to go in the 3rd and the Wolves leading 63-62.
Then it was time for the old second half drought where the offense turns it over, misses close ones, and really struggles to keep a nice flow going. In the next 4 minutes we get one AK 3 pointer and end up down by 9.
That was a huge turning point when Shved went out. We kept it in the 11-13 striking range for awhile after that. But then they started hitting threes, many from the corners. Adelman was not happy about that. He ended up putting all those guys on the bench and sent in the Steamer-Lou-Derrick crew. Their energy (especially Lou's) led a charge back, but it was just too far to come.
The three things that bother me the most right now:
1. Having that good ball movement and flow on offense is not consistent throughout the game. Shved can lead that at times and I have confidence in him, even though he goes through stretches where he doesn't quite have it figured out what play he should make. I still like him with the ball better than JJ. Barea is playing well, but he goes into that hero mode and others stop touching the ball at times. If he is not pulling off being the hero, we hit those droughts. Rubio should help this issue, not only when he is on the court, but diminishing the minutes that we need to have Luke and JJ at the point.
2. Love is good for a half but can't make it through playing well a full game. I'm sure the flu and the hand have contributed to it. I know he will get there, but who would have thought it would take this long?
3. Second half defense -- when we hit those droughts, we have to be able to shut down the guy that gets on a role on the other end. Baby the other night. Wade last night, and then everyone during that 3 point barrage in the 4th. We missed Malcolm last night and possibly Howard to add another guy into the mix. Maybe Adelman should have brought in Steamer or Lou to get overly physical and try to knock Baby out of the rythym he was in. Maybe even the same thing with a guard like Wade that is getting to the hoop. You'll get your free throws, but you are going to think twice about coming in here. That is why I posted last night that Shved might as well hit him hard, since they are going to give him the foul either way.
