Here's a pretty well done and interesting article that Mike Trudell wrote last week:

http://www.nba.com/timberwolves/news/superstar_trade_talk_080207.html

It looks at the Superstar trades that have gone down so far this season, and what the teams got in return. It's also got input from Ric Bucher and 'Sota's own, Paul Allen. Check it out.
Question: "Hey Antoine Walker, why do you shoot so many 3's?"

Answer: "Because there are no 4's."

This was interesting. Boy did the 76ers get a bad deal. Thaddeus Young for AI is tough to swallow.

Bucher:
\"I can't put Ray Allen or Pau Gasol, as players, on the level of KG and A.I., so I'm not sure that comparison is completely fair. Overall, I don't think Minnesota could've made a better deal than it did. My only argument is that they should have done it a year or two earlier, when KG's trade value was considerably higher.\"

Was it Bucher on with Simmons blathering about the countless better offers? My theory is that until these commentators see the players the draft picks turn into they somehow assume they will be studs. So in theory a deal with 4 1st round draft picks for KG would be better than one for Al Jefferson at the time of the trade. Who cares if 3 years later it turns out you just traded an all time great for a bag of spinach.

Boy is that a stupid last sentence. Just because in retrospect they might have gotten more for KG two years ago doesn't mean they should have traded him two years ago.

How would that press conference have gone?

McHale: I hope you guys enjoyed the Western Conference finals. Unfortunately due to my clairvoyance I've realized that Latrell Sprewell is going to decide to retire instead of demeaning himself by playing for 10 million a year and Sam Cassell is going to pout so much that I'll be forced to trade him and draft pick for a point guard who will make way too much money for way too many years. As a result of these future developments the team will be crap and it makes sense to just give up and trade KG now.

Good point about not necessarily trading KG after our solid WC Finals run, even though offers may have been better.

However, I think by \"two years ago\" they mean '05-06... and trading KG at the Trade Deadline in February. That was the second season after our WC Finals run and it's widely thought that the best KG offers were on the table at this time. Still, it's hard to know what was truly avilable and what was just rumor.

P.S. Yeah, I believe it was Bucher that was spouting off on the Simmons podcast, as you said.

Here's Mike Trudell's official response, which helps shed some more light on the subjet. Also, a very interesting bit that Bucher said about Bill Simmons:

Mike Trudell wrote:
\"Corey Brewer's\" point is very well taken, and I hesitated at first to include the latter part of Bucher's quote as I don't completely agree with it, and it's obviously a knock on the organization. At the same time, since it's the Wolves website, I think things like that lend some credibility, in that I'm not just trying to post propaganda.

I agree that just because teams \"say\" trades are on the table at the time, or a reporter \"hears\" that they are, it doesn't mean an actual deal could get done. So when we hear that Chicago offered this, L.A. offered that, it's pretty hard to take it seriously, for me at least. Not only that, but of course we couldn't trade him a year after the Western Conference finals, and prior to the 2006 season, there would have been a full-scale riot had KG been traded. The organization would have been absolutely destroyed by Minnesotans, and again, I'm not sure what would have been better than Jefferson, Gomes, Telfair, Ratliff's contract and some picks (Green too, I guess).

When I interviewed Bucher a few weeks ago on the site, he explicitly stated that when it comes to trades, Simmons has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. He plugs things into the trade machine, but honestly, no one but NBA GMs really know what is or isn't on the table. It's just not in their best interest to share that information with reporters unless they are leveraging.

Pretty interesting, in my opinion.

Anyone else got any thoughts?

He emailed it to me. He's on the road with the team and couldn't remember his login and password for the forums.

Two years ago there might have been some solid deals, but I would have to see some names to believe they are better than what we got.

the definition of the trade in generalities (as it will look once it shakes out in 2 years):
Wolves: All-Star PF, 1 or 2 role players
Boston: KG

So for a deal to be clearly better than the one they got they would have needed to get an all-star big man (that is a short list of possibilities) AND a solid to star second player. Who could give that up and still be a contender? I can't think of anyone.

If looking at those other star trades show one thing clearly it is that 1st round picks can be fools gold. Most commentator types would have said that KG for 5 1st round picks would be too much for Boston to give. That said what are the odds that the wolves could manage to draft an all-star and borderline all-star with 5 mid-range 1st round picks. 30% maybe.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to call Gomes a borderline all-star.

Me too... I'd say he's a borderline MVP candidate.

I heard Artest might actual go to Denver...I am not sure how he would fit in there...They have surprisingly worked with AI and Mello...I don't think they should corrupt it by adding some one like Artest...

Agreed. I want to see him in New York! That would be his best fit, in my opinion. We should start a petition that says he has to be traded (or sign) there...

I bet 3 years from now Gomes will be the 2-time defending MVP and people will be wondering how the celtics could just give him away for KG the bust.

If that *doesn't* happen I'd be disappointed...
