McHale was never my favorite player, especially considering the intense rivalry between the Lakers and the Celtics during that era. His "clothesline tackle" was one of the worst calls never made.
I can see how that was a
tough game for the Lakers and their fans.
Personally, it was one of my highlights as a teenager after Bird called his team a bunch of sissies after Game 3 and then McHale took out Rambis in Game 4 in LA. One of the best all-time Finals...and outcomes!

Well, Tod, being a lifelong Laker fan (and, therefore, a lifelong Celtic hater), I have to repeat that McHale's gross cheap shot was one of worst non-calls ever made. It should have been a gross flagrant foul, McHale should have been ejected from the game and, probably, suspended for the duration of the playoffs.
If I was Rambis, I would have broken that SOB's knee at the soonest opportunity. You hit me in the throat, flagrantly, you better hope you put me in the hospital because YOU just declared war on me.
Besides, McHale was a little bitch - almost as big a bitch as Ainge, who appeared to be whining even when the call went his way.
Here's a little perspective (mine) for you:
Kermit Washington/Rudy Tomjanovich: There is a near riot going on. Washington is facing his own basket. He turns and sees some 6'8" guy bearing down on him from the opposite end of the court, running full speed.
What would you do? Let him tackle you while running full speed? I am going to clock that bozo, too.
While it was unfortunate that Rudy got his jaw shattered, maybe he should have just stayed out of it.
Ron Artest goes after the fan: You know what? Little punk has been mouthing off all night and then throws a beer on me? I am going to use him for slam dunk practice! What ever gave that dwarf (mental and physical) the idea that throwing a beer on MWP was a good idea? Little punk was lucky.
So, I totally disagree with you, McHale was completely in the wrong and it was a completely bullshit play by a master cheapshot artist.
