Sigh:

Like many states, Minnesota has a part-time legislature. It means that, absent a special session, there’s a finite window within which to get legislation introduced and passed.

In 2010, the process of getting legislation regarding a new stadium for the Vikings got started too late. This year, steps already are being taken to ensure that doesn’t happen again.

Mike Kaszuba of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports that Senator Julie Rosen, a Republican, will introduce a bill in late January, not long after the annual session opens. She said it “might be very similar” to a plan that fizzled out in 2010, which would divert sales tax money currently being used to pay for the Minneapolis Convention Center.

Another obstacle comes from the lack of a local government that is clamoring to host the stadium, and thus to fork over some of the cash to build it.

Though the effort to get a stadium built would have happened without the events of recent days, Rosen acknowledged that, as a result of the collapse of the roof at the Metrodome, “[t]he discussion perhaps has been ramped up.”

Indeed it has. As we’ve said a time or two this week, folks in Minnesota have been visited by the Ghost of Christmas Future, which has shown the locals what life would be like with the home team playing a home game in a place other than their home of the last 50 years. Next Monday night’s game could provide a very different glimpse; by turning back the clock to the days of Metropolitan Stadium, maybe the new venue in Minnesota will have neither a an inflatable roof nor a retractable roof but no roof at all.

No way does a deal with the state happen that soon. The state budget has been pushing debt forward for years now with short term budget fixes and the chickens will be coming home to roost very very soon.

It seems like we might be entering an era where monster stadium dollars don't come from the state so easily. There will always be some money but even if it flipped from 2/3 government and 1/3 owner to 1/3 gov. and 2/3 owner that is a step in the right direction.

I am ok with a max of 1/3 of the money coming from the government. The problems arise when the owners want most or all of it funded with public money. That's just absurd.

And yeah, this deal won't be happening anytime soon. I hope the Vikings don't move...

It'd like to believe the league has more foresight than to move the Vikings. California needs to move one of the teams already in that state to LA. There isn't another market with the population or money to be better than Minneapolis.

There is still the risk of the owners taking the money and running on a secondary market OR figuring they can win doubly by moving the Vikings to LA and them moving the Chargers to when we are desperate.

It'd be a dick move but my guess is that most of these guys are dicks. Lets just say I'd be very very angry with the universe if that happened.

I on the other hand think that the stadium will get resolved this year. From what it all looks like the vikings will be getting money from the convention center and then it sounds like Dayton is all for the "racino" proposal. I'm sure you can add an alcohol tax somewhere in there and it's almost a for sure done deal. Hopefully we can just get Wilf and the NFL to pony up 40-50% instead of 33%.
