Ilya Kovalchuk is staying with the New Jersey Devils.

Kovalchuk has signed a 17-year deal which could top $150 million, a source told ESPN.com's Scott Burnside.

"This was a long arduous process that has taken frankly a little longer than I thought," agent Jay Grossman said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "But you know what, nothing is worth anything unless you work for it. I can tell you he is very happy to be with the New Jersey Devils."
Question: "Hey Antoine Walker, why do you shoot so many 3's?"

I do know the NHL cap works differently than NBA/NFL.

For example, the cap hit in the NHL is the average each year for the entire contract. So in this case, a little less than $6 million per year cap hit. In that regard, it's good for the Devils. But on the other hand, SEVENTEEN YEARS FROM NOW he'll still count $6 million against their cap!!!

Also, if they want they can pay him like $10 million per season for the first 5 years (or whatever), and it's still only a $6 million per year cap hit. That helps so that they can pay him a lot less at the end of the contract (although its still a $6 million cap hit in year 17, even if they are paying him less actual money.)

So I guess that's why they did it.

But ****, 17 years! I can't get over that. Absurd!

ESPN explains is perfectly:

"Kovalchuk rejected a 12-year, $101 million contract extension with Atlanta earlier this year, before the Thrashers traded him to New Jersey. But that doesn't necessarily mean he'll make less money per year at the front end of his new deal with the Devils.

While Kovalchuk's per-year terms were not yet disclosed, the nature of longer-term deals make it easier for a team to fit star players under the salary cap. Most of these types of deals are front-loaded with the bulk of the salary being paid out long before it expires.

Marian Hossa, for example, signed a 12-year deal with the Chicago Blackhawks before the start of the 2009-10 season. Hossa made $7.9 million this past season and will continue to take in that same annual salary for the next six years of the deal. However, for the 2016-17 season, his salary will drop to $4 million. In 2017-18 and 2018-19, Hossa will make $1 million and in the final two years of the deal, he will make just $750,000 each year."

yeah it actually isn't that absurd in hockey as there are deals like this that take place. Usually theres 1 or 2 a season where a guy signs a 10+ year contract. I was hoping the wild would do this with Koivu but still got him for 7 years. But yeah i would love to be that guy because for the next 17 years you are getting a paycheck.

Kahn's getting excited!!!

Rumor has it that when they hammer out the new CBA, he's going to lobby for a similar system so he can sign Ricky Rubio to a 31 year contract!

The NHL rejects the deal!

http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nhl/news/story?id=5396861
The NHL is rejecting Ilya Kovalchuk's 17-year, $102 million contract with the New Jersey Devils because it circumvents the league's salary cap, multiple sources told ESPN.com's Scott Burnside.

Just one day after Kovalchuk and the Devils came to an agreement on the longest contract in NHL history, the league determined that it was illegal, a person familiar with the issues raised told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the NHL hadn't made a formal announcement.

The contract was rejected because years of low salary at the end of the contract were added for the sole purpose of lowering the cap hit. The person added that no side believes Kovalchuk will play the final years of the deal at those terms. The star forward was slated to earn only $550,000 in each of the last five seasons of the contract that was to run through the 2026-27 season, when Kovalchuk would be 44.
