In the last few years high profile coaches have been jumping around or just as bad using the threat of doing so to get more money everytime they have a winning season. This makes the NCAA's student-athlete charade look even sillier.
As I was reading one of the many sagas about players who want to transfer because the teams coach leaves I had a thought. What if the transfer rule (1 year off) applied to coaches.
The NCAA looks particularly dumb in football when coaches leave BEFORE their team plays in sometimes major bowl games.
The rule is thus:
If you are currently the head coach of a division 1 college football program who is under contract for the next season you cannot take another job until you have been out of college coaching for 9 months.
They can feel free to be in the broadcast booth, the NFL, CFL whatever. Just not the NCAA for 9 months.
How will it help?:
1. Coaches who try to hold up their school every year will be shown to be bluffers.
2. Guys will be more likely to stay with a program and build continuity.
3. Instead of hiring the flavor of the month teams will have to look at top assistants so you get new blood
4. If a coach wants to up his pay every year and leave when he wants there is a way to do that. 1 year contracts. Put up or shut up every year. And they can explain that to the players they are recruiting.
