Offseason Workouts - Corey Brewer

September 13, 2007

Mike Trudell
Wolves Reporter

Minnesota's No. 7 overall pick, Corey Brewer, has been working out with Wolves coaches and teammates at Target Center of late, showing flashes of why he's expected to be such a terrific NBA player. We caught up with him this week after a particularly intense workout.

MT: Hey Corey, I know you love to get up and down the floor like we all saw in the NCAA Tourney last March, or in Vegas this summer, but be careful on that rim man. You were bringing the hammer dunk around a little bit hard today, weren't you?
Corey Brewer: No man, it's cool. That's how we have to play this year. We've got to get up and down the floor, because we're going to be young and athletic. If we're going to beat teams, we've got to get up and down the court.

MT: Fair enough. You came from a school featuring quite a bit of talent at Florida, but here in the NBA everybody is that talented...
CB: It's a high level of play, and it's going to be a lot of fun with the guys we have on this team -- we have a lot of young, athletic guys, and guys that like to pass the ball and find each other. We're going to make some things happen.

MT: Only the coaches know how the playing time will be assigned once the season tips off, but something I thought about while checking out today's scrimmage was the balance of strengths you and Ryan Gomes have, since your games are quite different but yet complementary.
CB: Right. He goes inside and I go outside, but we're both long and tall, so we can mix it up on teams.

MT: How's your boy Chris Richard looking to you?
CB: He's been developing really well since we got here and is learning the NBA game. In the NBA, you have more space, and he's learning to pass the ball, find cutters and his post moves are getting so much better. I think it's from working with Mr. Al Jefferson, because Al's been in the league for four years now. He's young, but he can really help a guy like Chris get better.

MT: Speaking of Big Al, you guys used to play against each other in AAU games down south, and even on some All-Star teams together. What can you say about his development since you first mixed it up?
CB: Oh man, he has gotten so much better. You can tell. He's always had a nice touch, but now he's unstoppable when he catches it in the paint with that turnaround jumper ... He's so strong, and he has so many moves in the post, I feel like his game has really developed.

MT: How do you feel about the expectations game in the media and in the public? At Florida, you were on both ends, with people expecting you to be bad early on, and to win it all coming off the first National Title.
CB: Going into my sophomore year at Florida, the expectations were that we weren't even going to make the tournament. I've dealt with that, but it doesn't affect me. I feel like we have a chance to win it all this year just like any team, and we just have to play as hard as we can play every game. We're a bunch of young guys, but as long as we play together, we can win. We're going to do whatever it takes.

MT: In other news, did I hear you whining about the weather already? I know it's not Florida, but come on man.
CB: It's just that winter is about to come. Minnesota's nice though, I like it a lot. Me and Chris both like it a lot. The perception is that it's always cold, but not yet, so it's all good.

MT: So what are you up to when you're not here working out?
CB: Nothing. Me and Chris are just playing PlayStation 3 and relaxing. We're into NCAA Football 2008 right now.

MT: Yeah, with Boise State on the cover? Looks like the jinx worked, they already lost.
CB: I'm on a five-game winning streak over Chris though.

MT: Who gets to play with the Gators?
CB: We don't play with Florida. I play with West Virginia, he plays with Florida State. It's not about the teams, it's about the player.

MT: OK then. Any other games?
CB: Oh yeah, we play Nintendo Wii too. It's legit.

MT: It is pretty solid, my roommate just bought it. The tennis is cool.
CB: We play the baseball. Chris thinks he's the best.

MT: He couldn't hit my splitter.
CB: Nobody can hit the splitter. It hits the ground.

MT: It's all timing, Corey.
CB: (Shrugs) Whatever.

Brewer is going to be awesome. I can't wait for this season to start. He said that he feels like we can win it all this year. That is an awesome attitude to have.
