Big Ticket Matches Perfectly
KG meant for Boston
Posted January 8th, 2008 by terrencethetree
Having watched Kevin Garnett transform the Celtics into a legitimate title contender and emerge as the front-runner for the league MVP award, I have begun to reflect on how sad it is that he was relegated to playing in Minnesota for the past twelve years. This comment ahould not be construed as a insult to Midwesterners; having lived in Indiana for several years, I found them to be pleasant, warm and gracious people. Rather, my angst stems from the realization that Kevin Garnett and Boston were meant to be together for his entire career. After playing less than half the season, it is fair to say that he embodies all that makes Boston distinct. KG is Boston. Think about why -
1. Intelligence - Home to elite institutions such as Harvard and MIT, and possessing the largest number of colleges per square mile in the US, Boston is this country's primary seat of academia. Similarly, KG is recognized as one of the smartest on-court players in the league. His defensive magnificence derives not simply from his athleticism and intensity. Instead, his basketball IQ allows him to seemingly always be in the right position to rebound and block shots. These smarts prominently manifested themselves when he shut down Yao Ming in the Rockets game despite giving up 7 inches. Offensively, his tremendous intelligence and instincts are evident in his guard-like passing ability.
2. Intensity - Whether it relate to politics, sports or driving, never have Bostonians been described as passive. One need only witness rush hour on Sturrow Drive or a Yanks-Sox game to affirm this phenomenon. Likewise, KG displays the same maniacal zeal whether it be in the fourth quarter of a playoff game, cheering a teammate on in the sideline, or offering post-game reflections. The man embodies passion. He makes Rodney Harrison look like JD Drew on tranquilizers.
3. History - A stroll down the Freedom Trail or a glance at a middle school history book reveal the crucial role that Boston played in the formation of our country. Heck, the local football team has a colonial militia firing muskets after every touchdown. Fittingly, the Big Ticket often comments on the significance of wearing the Celtic green. He has spoken proudly of the team's lore. Not only is he aware of the team's history, it helps drive him. Some might be in awe of the Celtic tradition - KG embraces it and is fueled by it.
Watcing KG lift his arms to the stands and see the crowd respond in harmony gave me chills at a sporting event for the first time a long while. The two seemed in perfect concert, like a virtuoso conductor and willing orchestra. Maybe I ought to stop wringing my hands about the music we could have made before and be thankful that Garnett is finally one of us.
