That would put things in a little different light. Just when I said I was fine with the Grizz issuing whatever penalty they like on Darko, I would be fine if a penalty by the NBA was based on the sort of contractual clause rather, making this more of a question of civil law but of sports authority, which should in this case only allow the FIBA to fine Darko.
But it would be highly surprising to me to learn that a player is bound by contracts not only with his franchise, but also with the NBA. But maybe that would then be a clause in his contract with the Grizz? I have never thought about that possibility...mostly because the way sport is organized in Europe is so much different from the way you do in in the USA. I guess that is where most of the differences in our opinions stem from: We do have a completely differing understanding of the way sports are / should be organised

From what I'm reading, I think you've pretty much got it figured out. It's not like they are seperate contracts per se, but by signing a contract with a team, that basically binds a player to the NBA and it's regulations/punishments/rules/etc as well. It's one and all the same thing. I can see where you are coming from in regards to who the players are accountable too, but whether any of us agree with it or not, that's just the way it is.
It's so much different than football in Europe because players are transferring among leagues and teams so often. However, it's just the NBA in North America. (Unless a player wants to go play in a faaaaar lesser basketball league, where he wouldn't make anywhere remotely as much money.)
Lastly, I'm glad you made your way to our friendly forums, because it is really interesting to get such unique opinions and general outlook on issues like this!
