Probably...just probably another reaction to the huge shifts in the West...

Seattle gets:

Francisco Elson (exp. contr.)
Brent Barry (exp. contr.)
1 first rounder (2009)
as well as creating a trade exception.

San Antonio gets:

Kurt Thomas

Hey, you can never have to many low post defenders in the big, BIG West today, especially if it prevents your competitors from getting on of the best defenders against your own top player as well. And compared to many other geezers recently changing jerseys, he's one who seemingly has some gas left in the tank to do what you want him to do...

But are the Spurs OLD, or what?

Just to keep up with modern NBA league standarts for assembling championship contenders, I propose the Wolves immediately contact Houston for a Craig Smith for Mt. Mutombo deal.

However, he is an expiring contract even though he's old.

It's a great, great trade for the Spurs. Thomas will come in very handy in the playoffs. He is a very good bigman/interior defender.
Question: "Hey Antoine Walker, why do you shoot so many 3's?"

Answer: "Because there are no 4's."

Just like I said...what I think especially smart about the Spurs (have they ever done anything really dumb in recent years???) to get Kurt Thomas before anybody else did.

It was obvious that Seattle was more than willing to let him go if the price was right.

And since so many more or less talented big man have appeared or reappeared in the west, having one more solid post defender won't do any harm. And if I remember who Thomas defended Duncan in the last series Suns-Spurs, Timmy D will be more than happy to see Kurty T in his own colours.

They are so damn smart...why can't our organisation be even half as clever? San Antonio isn't a big market and look what they have done after lucking out just once in the lottery. The Wolves are now in a similar situation FOR THE SECOND TIME in just one decade and every day I get more and more of the distinct feeling that this turn won't look much different than the last try.

GOD I HATE THE SPURS. They will probably trade Finley for Artest next.

I hope Thomas is washed up and Brent Barry wins the dunk contest again next year.

May I - just carefully - ask what's about the Spurs to hate?

I know one can argue Bowen played dirty, Manu was a flopper, Duncan was a whiner and Parker was married to Eva Longoria...but above that...

They are one of the best if not the best run franchise in the league. They have exceptional talent on their roster. They play basketball with an fundamentally sound effectiveness that is admirable. No one of their players gets busted with drugs or shooting in front of some strip club. They (usually) perfectly know how to pace themselves. They can react to every one's strategy without loosing their identy on the way because the team is so beautifully assembled. While everyone around them is running amok or panicking, they remain calm, make smart decisions and depend on their strenghts. They...

...oh...maybe all THAT'S to hate about the Spurs  ?

So let me get this straight. For the right to have Kurt Thomas on their roster for 50 games the Sonics gained 3 FIRST ROUND PICKS (2008 Suns, 2009 Spurs, 2010 Suns). Granted Those are basically high 2nd round pics but jeeez. If they go 0 for 3 on those picks they are still out NOTHING for the trouble.

But yeah.. keep McHale. It doesn't matter if you have a GM that doesn't hussle.

also let just follow the Thomas timeline

1. Suns aquire him to cover Tim Duncan
2. Suns decide that even during a title run they were obsessed with cutting salary and give Thomas away with 2 1st round picks to boot for nothing in retun. (even though they still had no one to cover Tim Duncan)
3. Suns aquire Shaq (giving away a core player to do so) to cover Tim Duncan
4. Spurs aquire Thomas to cover Shaq.

I don't know what this means... but it seems like there is some moral here.

I was gonna post something similar to this, but you beat me to it. Well done...

THREE picks for basically doing nothing. I just shake my head at our inactivity... :(

Yup. That's it.
Plus you described their players in the past tense. They are notorious for that nonsense.

THE Daddy
...past tense...
Yep, but it was thought to be \"reported speach\", because I was refering to what I expected to be other people's thoughts. And isn't \"reported speach\" put into past tense?

Very well put here man! The Spurs are a model franchise and only those who are jealous of the success would accuse the Spurs or flopping or whining...

When these same players took Rasho under their wings and won a championship...

The Spurs are still the team to beat in the West and now to add Thomas is just another feather in the cap of the Spurs and the front office of the Spurs...
