No "Musings" Tonight, Game Thread Instead

Written by College Wolf on .

Minnesota Timberwolves (10-25)
vs. Milwaukee Bucks (17-20)

Milwaukee

So I was all set to do a "Musings of a Wolves Fan" article tonight, since I can't go to the game because I have to stay home with CW Jr.  However, I just found out that the game isn't going to be broadcast on TV.  I'm too stupid not tech savvy enough to figure out how to watch it illegally online, plus that seems like a lot of work anyways... and my computer sucks is slow.

So instead, I'll leave everyone with this game thread so that we can (hopefully) get some comments going during the game and whatnot.  I'll probably do a bit of boxscore watching online, since that is about the best that I can hope for.  A few things:

-  Will the Wolves make it 5 straight wins?  Hopefully they can build off the pounding that they administered to the Oklahoma City Durants.  I don't see why we can't win this one at home, against a marginal at best Bucks squad.
-  Andrew Bogut is OUT for the game.  Big Al and Love should dominate inside.
-  Can Foye continue his torrid shooting and general great play?  The next five games or so should give an accurate barometer of where he's at.  He's had a great 10 game stretch, but you have to admit that it's been against the dregs of the league lesser competition.
-  I am loving Telfair at point guard.  I knew there was a reason that I had faith in him the past season and a half.
-  Gomes is playing well lately, after a slow start.  Thank goodness because I was getting hammered about his play in the forums.
-  The Bucks currently hold the 8th playoff spot in the East.  They really need this win against the "bottom feeders" of the league.  Can we do our part to derail their playoff hopes?

Feel free to check out and comment in the TWolvesBlog forum game thread if that is more of your thing.

Five Questions: Talking McHale, Wittman, and Love.

Written by College Wolf on .

I recently did a Wolves interview with Anthony from NBA Outsider of the MVN Network.

It's not easy being a Minnesota Timberwolves fan.

Early-season ineptitude caused team owner Glen Taylor to finally put his foot down, make a coaching change...and replace Randy Wittman with one of the most hated men in Minnesota sports, Kevin McHale.  If that wasn't bad enough for T'Wolves fans, the team has proceeded to go 2-10 after the switch to McHale.

College Wolf of T'Wolves Blog was kind enough to sit down with MVN for an interview and tell us just how bad things have gotten in Minnesota...

Musings of a Wolves Fan... (12/30/08)

Musings of a Wolves Fan (12.30.08)
vs. Dallas Mavericks

Jet

Season Record: 6-25

Click HERE for our TWB Forum Discussion Thread

Epic.  Monster. Collapse.

How else would you describe what happened in the second half of tonight's "game" versus the Dallas Mavericks?  I didn't know it was even possible for an NBA team to blow a 29 point lead after the ways in which they had thoroughly dominated their opposition (in every facet), for the first half of the game.  But as we've all become accustomed to, when watching the Minnesota Timberwolves, it's never truly over, until it's OVER.

But wait... hold on.  Yes... why yes, by golly, I guess I do seem to have a few more options for you to describe tonight's game:  "It was a (insert one or more of the following words below) collapse for the ages!"

Handy Dandy Word Bank:
astronomical, colossal, cosmic, elephantine, enormous, gigantic, grand, herculean, immense, jumbo, mammoth, massive, monstrous, monumental, mountainous, prodigious, super, stupendous, titanic, tremendous, vast, whopping extensive, hulking, grandiose, lofty, majestic, cavernous, overwhelming, staggering, boundless, cosmic, immeasurable, infinite, etc etc, etc, etc, ad nauseum.

For those of you that actually watched this game, it's probably half part mind-boggling and half part utter-disbelief.  Or maybe at this point in your fandom, it isn't.  Maybe "expected" is the word I was looking for.  If this type of thing hadn't happened already this season, then I guess it would truly be utter-disbelief.  But to the extent of and timing of how we lost this game was just staggering.  The Wolves played possibly their best half of the entire season tonight in the first half against Dallas.  In typical Wolves fashion, they followed it up with possibly their worst half of the entire season.  Which was just enough to blow a 29 point lead and hand the Mavericks a win (that they had no business whatsoever winning), on a silver platter.  It wasn't even a kick to the groin or punch to the gut.  It was quicker than that.  It was like someone just blew your head clean off.

I’m still sitting here trying to wrap my head around the facts regarding just how exactly we just lost this game.  I’m also equally considering ending this article right here and now.  Because frankly, a team that gives up so easily and plays like complete and utter Diseased Donkey Dung, doesn’t really deserve to have anything written about them.  At least, nothing positive deserves to be penned.  I’m debating just exactly as to WHY I should combat sleep for any longer and stay up past 2 AM to write about the latest Kevin McHale & Glen Taylor Blue Light Special.  What’s in it for me?  Does anyone honestly even care any more?  I suppose that writing about this woebegone team is my self-flagellation for my sins of a thousand previous lifetimes.

Looking at the stats, it doesn’t even make sense as to how we lost. We had a better FG% (49.4% to 47.1% for Dallas) and eFG% (43.8% to 41.2%.)  We made the same number of shots (1 less three pointer) and had only one less rebound (but six less offensively.)  I suppose it makes some sense that we had six more turnovers and nine less free throws attempted (only six less FT makes), but does that really equate to blowing a twenty freakin nine point lead?  Maybe Dwayne Casey is just a damn good coach?  Nah… that couldn’t be it (but he’s better than McHale!)  So, we’ll just chalk this up as one of life’s great unsolved mysteries, I guess.  And speaking of Dwayne Casey, I would like to borrow from CanisHoopus and point out the great quote by our fearless leader, Kevin McHale, after firing Casey 40 games into his second season:

"The ups and downs, we just couldn't find any consistency. After 40 games [record of 20-20] we were in another of our inconsistent times.

"There was no huge watershed moment where 'this' happened or 'that' happened.  It was your basic two steps up the hill and two steps down. We were never able the entire year to establish a style of play we could bank on. We'd get close, you sawsigns, and we'd backslide."

Believe me, I am in NO way trying to say that Casey was a great (or even good coach.)  Nor am I advocating or even sticking up for him.  I’m just sayin’.

Blogger MVP/ROY Rankings - Edition 4

Written by College Wolf on .

Blogging + Ranking Things in Lists = Awesomness.

The Fourth Edition of the Blogger MVP/ROY Rankings is being hosted by RaptorsHQ.com   They are a great blog, so make sure to check them out.  You should know the drill with the rankings and all the business by now, so quit wasting your time with my needless chatter and check them out!  As usual, it's another great addition with some hilarious comments and a few surprising results.  If you want to check out how I voted and my super witty and extremely humorous stupid un-funny comments, just scroll down a little ways.  Feel free to mock and ridicule my voting as you see fit.

EDITION 1 (HoopsAddict)
EDITION 2 (Upside And Motor)
EDITION 3 (The Dream Shake)

After careful consideration, I wasn't going to inundate you with my boring rankings and comments decided to post my rankings and comments for my 10 MVP's and 5 Rookies of the Year below:

MVP:

(10 = 1, 9 = 2, 8 = 3 and so on)

10.  Chris Bosh:  The record of his team is severely hampering his placement on this list.

9.  Kobe Bryant:  It’s not like he doesn’t have help, hence the low ranking.  Plus, I don’t not not like him.

8.  Tim Duncan:  Would people be offended if I suggested his renewed vigor and longevity is due to steroids?  Or, I guess maybe he really is just that good…

7.  Paul Pierce:  Still the leader of the best team EVER in the league.

6. Brandon Roy:  I traded him from my fantasy team because I am trying to model it after the Timberwolves.

5.  Dirk Nowitzki:  He’s so quietly in fourth place for points per game average that I almost forget he still played in the NBA.

4.  Dwight Howard:  He should have to wear a sign around his neck at all times that says: “DANGER: Do not come within 25 feet.”

3.  D-Wade:  So I ran into him at the grocery store the other day and I was like “Yo D-Wizzzzade, man you rock!  You. Da. Man!  Fo real home slice gimme some skin, high fiver down low baaaaa-by.”  He looked at me quizzically, eventually nodded, and then walked away.  That was so chill.

2.  Chris Paul:  The most negative thing I can think to say about him is that he recently snapped his all-time NBA record for consecutive games with a steal.  Yeah, he’s good.

1.  LeBron James:  This is unanimous, right?  Anyone that doesn’t put him #1 obviously has some kind of demento bone to pick, or an inferiority complex.

ROY:

(5 = 1, 4 = 2 and so on)

5. Brook Lopez:  How funny is it that A) The Timberwolves could really use this guy and B) He is the one player that a lot of us Wolves fans absolutely did NOT want us to draft last year.  We obviously know nothing.

4. DJ Augustine:  What’s been happening lately?  Is it the Rookie Wall, or a small slump?  I’d guess a “slump,” being that he has proven he can play with the big boys.

3.  Russell Westbrook:  Proving to everyone why he was drafted number four overall.  Who knew he could play PG as well as he has been.  Obviously not Kevin McHale.

2. OJ Mayo:  Stock falls slightly after four straight losses.  Still, he’s the rookie leader in points per game, and there is still a chance he could be in the running for the ROY award when all is said and done.

1. Derrick Rose:  Running away with the ROY trophy.

Three Cheers for Mailbags

mailbag.jpgInvitation to the Mailbag Party...

Time for the next TWolvesblog Open Mailbag for anyone that is interested in sending any questions and/or thoughts, and I'll anwer them as soon as I get a sufficient amount of submissions. Don't be afraid to send stuff in (I don't want to have to make stuff up!) Heck, I promise that I'll even answer them all... I'm like an Equal Opportunity Employer.

Well my friends... it's no longer Cucumber Season.  The NBA season is in full swing and we're appoximately 35% or so done.  There are almost limitless talking points for our awesome and exciting, uptempo, fan-favorite team, so there's no excuse for not sending SOMETHING in.  (I guess if your apathy level has reached an all-time high, and you just don't have the energy to email me, that's understandable too.)  I mean, we finally fired DimWittman, The Iron Ranger Kevin McFale is now our coach, our roster is a perpetual conundrum, who plays and how much?  OJ Mayo is tearing up the league while KLove is on his way to "Colossal Bust" status, The Celtics are possibly the best team EVER and the Wolves have a 13 game losing streak.  The talking points are endless...  The more you send me, the better the mailbag...

P.S.  If all else fails, just email me some funny Haiku's.

P.S.S.  Or you can just email me and tell me that I suck.  It's all good.

Blogger MVP/ROY Rankings - Edition 3

Written by College Wolf on .

Blogging + Ranking Things in Lists = Awesomness.

The Third Edition (aka Quarter Season) of the Blogger MVP/ROY Rankings is being hosted by The Dream Shake.  They rock.  Check out their website.  We play them this Saturday and YAO is probably shaking with feverish anticipation at the thoughts of taking on the front line of Jefferson, Love, Smith, and Booth... He will probably have at least 73 rebounds.  Anyways, I digress.

EDITION 1
EDITION 2

After careful consideration, I wasn't going to inundate you with my boring rankings and comments decided to post my rankings and comments for my 10 MVP's and 5 Rookies of the Year below:

MVP:
(10 = 1, 9 = 2, 8 = 3 and so on)

10. Devin Harris:  The Nets wouldn’t trade him for Jason Kidd and twenty #1 draft picks.

9.  Brandon Roy:  I traded him in my Western Conference Only Auction Keeper Fantasy Basketball League.  Why did I do that you ask?  I don’t know.

8.  Chauncey Billups:  He has intangibles and stuff like that.  Oh yeah, and he makes the Nuggets win.

7.  Kobe Bryant:  Grumble grumble grumble as much as I’d love to leave him off the list entirely grumble grumble…

6.  Tim Duncan:  What did they do with Greg Popovich?  And why is some bum off the street coaching their team?

5.  Paul Pierce:  Twenty-One and Two!!!!11!!1!  Where is the love?!?!

4.  Dwight Howard:  Some players get “in the zone.”  Howard enters BEASTMODE and destroys everything in his path.

3.  D-Wade:  I was walking down a dimly lit back alley last weekend and I saw some thug jump Wade.  He slashed him with a blade and then ran off.  I could see the wound and there was no blood.  He was bleeding liquid titanium.

2.  Chris Paul:  I’d say “better luck next year”, but LeBron might win the next 12 MVP Awards in a row.

1.  LeBron James: Ok, I finally had to switch it up.  Chris Paul didn’t do anything to “deserve” getting demoted, but LBJ is just too good.  Imagine in a few years when he enters his prime… will anyone ever be able to guard him, or will he just go out and score 50 points per game?  The deciding factor was that the Cavs currently have the second best record in the league, while the Hornets initially struggled out of the gate.

ROY:
(5 = 1, 4 = 2 and so on)

5. Michael Beasley:  Almost took him off the rankings completely, but I didn’t want to hurt his fragile psyche.  I don’t want to be the one responsible for sending him off the deep end.

4. DJ Augustine:  Despite the fact that he’s five-foot nothing, he’s showing everyone what he can do out on the court.  His production has skyrocketed with the increased minutes of late.

3.  Kevin Love:  Double-Double MACHINE.  You can’t stop him; you can only hope to contain him.

2. OJ Mayo:  He gets “Chris Paul’d” this week because Derrick Rose is just that good.

1. Derrick Rose – Has exceeded my pre-season expectations in every imaginable way.  And this is coming from a person that would have drafted him #1 overall dating back to the beginning of the last NCAA season.

Live From L.A. With Mike Trudell

Written by College Wolf on .

Lakers

I recently conducted an exclusive interview with good friend (and former Wolves Reporter), Mike Trudell.  As some of you may or may not know, he is now kicking it out in the sunny confines of Los Angeles, lounging on the beaches looking for chicks as the new Lakers Reporter for the Lakers.com He's doing a fantastic job (as usual) covering the Lakers this season.  I don't know about you guys, but I think Timberwolves.com has just been a little bit less exciting since he left.  Anyways, the reason for this exchange is that the Wolves will get absolutely demolished play the Lakers this Sunday at the Staples Center.  What better time than now to hit up Trudell for some insight into the Lakers Franchise.  I know that a lot of Wolves fans may slightly dislike Kobe the Lakers, but check out our Q&A; it's loaded with more insightful and in-depth information than you can shake a stick at.  I mean, where else are you going to find out "behind the scenes" info that only a few lucky individuals have access to?  Have you ever wondered who Kobe is buddies with?  Have you ever wondered about the atmosphere around the players and Lakers Organization?  How does working for the Lakers compare to working for the Wolves?  Oh yeah, and we have even managed to cram in a little preview for the upcoming game this Sunday.

Find out all this juicy info and more, by clicking "Read More" below...

New Coach, Same Story

on .

As you all know, our beloved Randy Wittman was replaced on the bench by his former boss Kevin McHale this week.  Since the replacement two games have passed.  While the Wolves managed to buck last weekend's trend of getting killed by 20+, the team continued a popular trend of building a nice lead only to blow it in the second half.

A few notes on the Wittman firing.  I don't think there's many fans that are going to miss Randy Wittman.  I also don't think any fans will miss Kevin McHale in the front office (assuming his front office days and duties are truly over).  It may be partial justice that he is sleeping in the bed he has made, but to me it seems like a complete acknowledgement by ownership that the 2008-2009 season is a lame-duck one, which is especially frustrating for a franchise that has been rebuilding for three years.  The major kicker: the beginning of next season will basically be another "year 1" in a perpetual string of rebuilding.

Although I will admit the team seems to show more enthusiasm over the past two games, I am interested to see if the players keep going hard for their new coach over the next 10 games.  One major issue this team can't get around, no matter who is coaching, is that no one can be consistently relied upon to hit an outside jump shot, especially with Mike Miller injured.  Nearly every position is developing or otherwise uncertain, and the only "certainty" we have, Al Jefferson, is never certain which position he's going to play on any given night.

Some characteristics of the new regime (if one can call a staff that's completely identical minus Randy Wittman a "new" regime) that drive me nuts, and I'm sure I'm not alone, are (i) the Bondesque License to Shoot for McCants, and (ii) the curious increase in Kevin Ollie's minutes.  The one hope I have for McHale that I've seen the past two games is using those fouls in a more violent manner.  McHale played for a very physical Boston team and I hope he instills that physicality in this poor squad.

Basically, although there's a "new" coach, nothing is really different.  The coach is the same guy that put this squad together, and I don't think this team is on the way to making any believers out of the fans.  I'm still only going to Target Center once this season to see LeBron, and I don't think that's going to change.  If you can't tell, I guess there's just not really much new to say that wasn't said last week, unless you're a Kevin Ollie fan.
