Wolves Updates 9/28

Written by SG on .

Don't be surprised if the Timberwolves trade guard Trenton Hassell to the Dallas Mavericks within days.

The Wolves' low payroll probably won't last long because they hope to sign forward Al Jefferson, the key to the Garnett trade, to a long-term extension. Jefferson could command a near-maximum contract after averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds in 2006-07, his third season in the league.

The Wolves also are expected to pursue a new deal with forward Craig Smith, who was a steal in the second round of the 2006 draft. Smith should get a significant raise next summer as a free agent.

In the short term, the Wolves must trim the roster. There are 16 players under contract after center John Edwards was added this week. Edwards is a long shot to make the regular-season roster. He will provide depth during the exhibition season while Smith and Mark Madsen recover from injuries.

Jerry Zgoda/Star Tribune conducted a Q&A with Randy Wittman in which the coach discussed a young team post-Garnett and his expectations for the season:
The only expectation is that we're going to compete every night. If we can get them to play hard every night with the talent I think they have, then we can be competitive. I don't think I can put a win-loss record on it. Our goal is to make the playoffs. We're going out every night to win. That's what I want these guys to believe. They're going to hear from the media and everybody else that they're the worst team in the league. I don't believe that. I truly don't. I don't want any of these guys believing it. This is a chance for us to become a young team that grows together.
KSTP sports-talk host Matt Thomas is no longer a candidate for the Timberwolves' radio play-by-play position. According to Thomas, station officials and the Wolves met to talk about potential options that would satisfy both sides -- the Wolves are heard on BOB 106-FM -- but could not come to an agreement.

Mike Kahn/Fox Sports on Kevin McHale:
He went on record saying he's had three or four deals on the table over the past month, but without any results.

Of course, that's no surprise. He has drained his old teammate Danny Ainge — the Celtics president — of all possible deals as a consequence of the Garnett deal. The rest of the league appears to be amused by McHale, with only the potential to confuse or rip him off the true reason to listen. Maybe Randy Foye and Rashad McCants have value, but that's about it. Essentially, the relief of the pressure surrounding the Garnett deal has now been replaced by reality. And nothing about it is pretty.

Ben Collins/SLAM Online on the Reebok Family Reunion:
They show us some Gerald Green team shoes, tell us what he’s going to do at the dunk contest and show us a shoe related to it, but we’re sworn not to say (it is, though, spectacular).

The Miami Herald reported on its website that the Heat is talking to the Timberwolves about trades that would involve Ricky Davis and Trenton Hassell. Davis will be a free agent at the end of this season, and there are a lot of reasons the Wolves would entertain the right offer. The Heat has two players with contracts that expire at the end of the year -- the type of contracts the Wolves are looking for -- in guard Jason Williams ($8.9 million) and center Michael Doleac ($3.2 million).

Wolves Updates 9/27 Part 2

Written by SG on .

With the start of training camp looming Tuesday, the Heat remains in talks with as many as three teams regarding possible trades. Among those potential partners are the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are looking to unload several contracts after trading Kevin Garnett to Boston in a five-for-one deal in July.

The Garnett trade left Minnesota with a surplus of shooting guards and small forwards -- two positions where the Heat has been looking to add depth throughout the offseason.

The Heat's interest likely centers on swingmen Ricky Davis and Trenton Hassell, veterans who apparently don't fit in Minnesota's plans to rebuild around a youthful nucleus of Al Jefferson, Gerald Green and former University of Florida star Corey Brewer.

Fred Hoiberg was on KFAN with PA & Dubay this morning.  Click here to listen.
Hoiberg said that McCants, Smith, and Foye have been here all summer working out and, along with the other young players, have developed a bond and are starting to play well together.  He said the team is younger and willing to work hard. He also talked about how the players will be held more accountable than last season. Referring to Ricky Davis, he said that if someone gets out of line, they'll be suspended or benched and will be put on a short leash.

Hoiberg said Juwan Howard was disappointed that Garnett left but that he and his agent came in last week and "hashed everything out" in front of owner Taylor and Coach Wittman. Howard will do whatever it takes to help the team out and knows that any trade has to be also beneficial for the Wolves.

On Ricky Davis, Hoiberg said you don't have to worry about his effort, just have to get him to play the right way. He's been great the last month- coming into work with the younger players.

He said they feel that this year they have a better group of guys who will rally around each other.

Mike Trudell/Timberwolves site talks to Corey Brewer about the offseason and upcoming preseason.

Tony Mejia/CBS Sportsline places Ricky Davis at  #18 on his list of the top shooting guards.
One thing Davis has proven throughout losing stints in both Boston and now Minnesota is that he's a gamer. He'll fight you to the final whistle, and that type of attitude should prove to be a good influence on the Wolves' young wings during this rebuilding stage.

Wolves Updates 9/27

Glen Taylor, owner of the Wolves, said that the Kevin Garnett trade might have never developed had Garnett not come to Kevin McHale last spring and asked for a three-year contract extension. But Garnett, who was being paid $22 million a season, refused the suggestion of Taylor that KG take a cut in salary, so the decision was made to make the trade. Taylor said that the Chicago Bulls were interested in Garnett but not at the salary he demanded.

-Taylor also revealed that he wanted to replace Dwane Casey as coach earlier than he did, but that Randy Wittman turned him down as a replacement the first time...

-Jimmy Williams, the fomer Gophers assistant, is working with former NBA player and coach John Lucas to try to improve the play of a number of players, including Gerald Green, who came to the Wolves in the Garnett trade.

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Wednesday that the team has signed John Edwards. Edwards, a 7-0 center from Kent State, has NBA experience with the Indiana Pacers and Atlanta Hawks.

The Wolves, who open training camp Saturday, aren't ready to admit they're rebuilding.

"These guys don't want it to be called rebuilding; these are young guys who are convinced they're going to go out there and win games," McHale said.

-Kevin Garnett, traded to the Boston Celtics by the Timberwolves, telephoned Wolves coach Randy Wittman just before he left for training camp to wish Wittman good luck.

-Don't think the Timberwolves are excited about having to go overseas for training camp.

Henry/TrueHoop with observations on Garnett during an NBA commercial shoot yesterday:
Don't read too much into this, but Kevin Garnett is pretty darned stiff. The way he walks is just a little like you might walk if you did not have knees. And with a little grimace. But let's be honest, he's an NBA veteran, and a lot of NBA veterans walk like that. He's also as enthusiastic and playful as ever.

Hoops And Other Pop Culture writes that the real estate listing it posted yesterday did not belong to Garnett.

Rick Alonzo/Pioneer Press with notes from the team's media luncheon.
Now that the Wolves are in full-scale rebuilding mode, it's possible veterans such as Ricky Davis, Trenton Hassell and Mark Blount might not play as much as they did last season. Would those players be comfortable adapting to a reduced role?

"That's going to play itself out," Wittman said. "If it does play out that way, yeah, I think they're going to have to. We're going to go with the guys that deserve to play. We're going to play guys that play hard every night. We're going to establish that right from the start."

Mike Trudell/Timberwolves site chats with Ryan Gomes and Gerald Green about "about elements of pop culture they use to relax after leaving the building."

Gerald Green with some predictions on the upcoming season.
MVP: “Hard to say…”
Scoring Champ: “Honestly, I think Kobe or ‘Melo.”
ROY: “That’s tough too … I’ll go with Kevin Durant.”
Sleeper Team: “Timberwolves.”
Sleeper Player: “Myself.”
Favorite to win it all: “Boston. That’s what everyone is saying.”

Dan Bilicki/Sun Media previews the Western Conference teams.
THE BIG QUESTION: Who's going to lead this team? The Garnett trade left the T-Wolves devoid of veterans. This young squad, with an average age of 25.8, will have to look up to the likes of Mark Blount, Theo Ratliff and Howard. The oldest guard on the team, Marko Jaric, turns 29 in October. The younger guys may have to lead themselves.

Craig Clough lists Garnett among the league's best current players.

Britt Robson/On The Ball with a report on the team's media luncheon yesterday that should be read in its entirety.

G.R. Anderson/City Pages ranks the 10 best moments at the Metrodome.

Number 5: Timberwolves inaugural season

One of the great insults in Minnesota sports history—and there have been many—is the departure of the NBA's Minneapolis Lakers to Los Angeles. Some 30 years later, the Minnesota Timberwolves brought professional basketball back to the Twin Cities, and for the team's first year, the home games were played in the Dome. One November 8, 1989, Michael Jordan scored 45 points as the Bulls beat the Woofies 96-84, but the crowds kept coming. April 17, 1990, saw the third-largest crowd in NBA history—49,551—flock to what was a surprisingly decent basketball venue. That season, the T'Wolves drew 1,072,572 fans total, an NBA record that may never be broken.

Guard Troy Hudson, who received a $10 million contract buyout from the Timberwolves this year, will receive an additional $1.2 million to play for Golden State this season.

Former Gophers basketball assistant Jimmy Williams, in town the other day working out new Timberwolf Gerald Green, told friends the 6-foot-8 forward will be the best shooter on the team, if he isn't already. Williams successfully recruited Green out of Gulf Shores Academy High for Oklahoma State before Green opted for the NBA draft and was chosen by the Boston Celtics.

KSTP-AM sports talk whiz Matt Thomas no longer is under consideration for the Timberwolves' radio play-by-play job.

Training Camp Updates

Written by SG on .

Wolves Vice President of Basketball Operations Kevin McHale said he talked to other teams all summer about deals that would further transform his team, but called September "a slow, slow, slow month" while potential trading partners discuss options with other teams and contemplate the $67 million-plus salary cap.

"We have three or four deals that are just laying around," McHale said. "Teams are like, 'If we can do this, we'll do that.' At a certain point between now and Nov. 2, they're going to get their things in order."

From Zgoda's article and AP Sports:

Al Jefferson- According to Kevin McHale, there have been "preliminary" talks with his agent about a contract extension. The team has until Oct 31 to sign the player or he'll become a restricted free agent next summer.

Craig Smith- A sprained ankle is expected to keep him out from the "opening days of training camp"

Juwan Howard- Coach Wittman said, "He's never come to me and said, 'Coach, I want out."'

Chris Richard- McHale said he hasn't yet accepted the team's qualifiying offer.

Rashad McCants- "Wittman said McCants is 100 percent healty."

Mark Madsen-  He's expected to be out for at least another six weeks because of his shoulder injury.

Stephen Litel/Hoopsworld writes that the team needs Juwan Howard.
Universally known as a great “locker room guy,” Howard’s importance to Minnesota grew exponentially following Garnett’s arrival in Boston. With nine players on the Timberwolves roster born in or after 1982, Howard--who has been in the NBA since 1994--could serve as an invaluable mentor to the Wolf Cubs on life in the NBA, being a professional and how to deal with adversity.
