When the Timberwolves obtained Juwan Howard in a trade from Houston in June, the 6-foot-9, 253-pound forward was excited about the opportunity to play with all-star Kevin Garnett. But when Garnett was subsequently dealt to Boston, Howard politely requested that the Wolves move him.

That, apparently, won't happen before the Wolves open practice next week. Wolves owner Glen Taylor expects Howard to report to Minnesota.

"I hope so," Taylor said. "Nothing has happened on that."

You can see that we have the ability to change up our lineup a bit, either go bigger or smaller. But they still have to get themselves going and playing at a level where they can help each other get better. That's how you end up with a good team, not just good individuals.

The Timberwolves have added center John Edwards to their big-man mix, with training camp less than two weeks away.

Andy Bountogianis, director of worldwide basketball for Mark Termini Associates, said Edwards has agreed to a one-year deal with the Wolves and should arrive in the Twin Cities next week.

Also from Youngblood:

Owner Glen Taylor said the Wolves will likely wait until the team returns from training camp in Europe to get serious in talks to sign forward Al Jefferson to a contract extension.

After wavering and waffling, Pinckney on Friday finally said yes, agreeing to become an assistant coach on the T-Wolves bench. The former Villanova assistant said he struggled mightily with the decision, not just because he has to leave his alma mater, but because his ultimate goal is to be a college head coach...

Pinckney had turned down other NBA jobs in recent years and also said no to an invite from Comcast SportsNet to be a 76ers TV analyst. He said yes to this one because Minnesota had something no one else did - Randy Foye on its roster.

Peter Fink, NBA Vice President Events and Attractions said “The Minnesota Timberwolves are a very exciting young team and they are looking forward to being the first NBA team to play in Istanbul in front of the basketball-loving fans here.” He also spoke of how the Timberwolves would not only be in Istanbul for the game but that they would be spending a week of their training camp in the city. However the game was definitely on everyone’s minds and NBA Legend Darryl Dawkins summed it up “Efes Pilsen want to win the game, but so do we! So you had all better sit tight on your seats because it’s going to be a great game.”

Villanova assistant coach Ed Pinckney is returning to the NBA ranks as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves, two sources confirmed yesterday.

Pinckney, 44, was entering his fifth season as an assistant to Jay Wright at Villanova, a school he led to the 1985 NCAA championship. He had developed into a top recruiter and a tutor to the Wildcats' big men.

Reportedly, the Timberwolves thought they had a deal with Pinckney last week, but he turned it down. Team president Kevin McHale came up with another offer this week and Pinckney accepted, although final details were being worked out yesterday.

FREE AGENT FOCUS: The Timberwolves still have both salary-cap exceptions available -- the mid-level and the bi-annual -- but already have a clogged roster. They aren't expected to use either exception, a good thing, since their lottery-bound situation isn't likely to attract any players serious about winning.

Al Jefferson may have been on to something.

Last season he vehemently stood by his belief that the Boston Celtics didn’t need Greg Oden. He said it during an 18-game losing streak. He said it after one of the worst seasons in franchise history. No Oden. No questions.

His staunch opinion seemed so young and naïve at the time. But now the 22 year old may prove to be wise beyond his years. On Thursday, Oden underwent microfracture surgery on his right knee and could miss the entire 2008 season.
