TWB NBA Draft Lottery Mascot Challenge: Championship

Written by Derek Hanson on .

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND:

mr t VS. macguyver 2

There's no need to belabor this post with a detailed re-cap of the Mascot Challenge Final Four.  After some extremely close battles across the board in the Elite 8, Mr. T and Macgyver absolutely leveled their most recent competition.  Mr. T took out the Macho Man with 78% of the vote and Macgyver went all Old Yeller on the tournament's underdog, knocking out Fat Spiderman with 60%.

We've spent nearly three weeks obsessing over the virtues of these two opponents.  One's a Grade A mamma jamma who lays a beat down on any jibba-jabba talk'n fool in his way.  The other is an other-wordly genius with a sweet, sweet mullet, who invented the phrase "Impossible is Nothing".  Both are supremely worth candidates to lead the Timberwolves into Tuesday's draft lottery. But there can only be one...

So what will it be Wolves fans?  Brains or Brawn?  Do we overcome our 21 years of bad luck with a haymaker to the jaw and a boot to the crotch, or do we narrowly escape from its grasp using packet of ketchup and a bendy-straw?  One choice will lead us to John Wall or Evan Turner, the other to Derrick Coleman, er, DeMarcus Cousins.  The stakes for the Timberwolves have truly never been higher!

And now, the time has come to name our mascot. So take a moment to reflect, weigh the options, and cast your final vote.  Just make sure that it's the right one, because if it's not, this is pretty much what will happen to our franchise...

And on that note, here's your ballot!

More Rubio Goodness - Wolves News 5.11.10

Rubio Boosts His Value

By Mark Woods at the Star Tribune:

"To be in the Final Four of the Euroleague, this is where I want to be," said the recipient of the league's Rising Star Award, given annually to the best young player. "I've worked hard to make it to this goal. And this shows me that I chose the best option. I am so happy on this team. These players help me improve every day and so do the assistant coaches and other staff."

The Wolves, should they decide to retain Rubio's rights rather than package him to move up in June's draft, hold an appreciating asset. Team sources confirm that since he helped the Spanish national team to last year's European championship, he has spent extended time in the weight room for the first time in his career. Meanwhile, Barcelona's coaches have put in overtime to work on his shooting mechanics.

- We can't trade this kid.  Well, unless we get some absolutely sick offer AND land John Wall in the draft.  That's the only way.  Even then, I truly believe Rubio will be able to come over to the NBA and make an immediate impact.  I hope Kahn is careful with how he handles this "asset."

Rubio Is Living Up To His Hype

By David Aldridge at NBA.com:

So there's time to check in across the pond. That's where Kahn and execs from other wannabe playoff contenders were, checking out the talent at the European Final Four. Kahn, of course, was there to look in on the Timberwolves' future, 19-year-old Ricky Rubio, whose Regal FC Barcelona team won the championship Sunday over Olympiacos, 86-68, for its second Euroleague title. Former Grizzlies player Juan Carlos Navarro, with 21 points and five assists against Olympiacos, was named Final Four MVP; Rubio, who scored nine points, was the first player to cut down the nets.

"Barcelona will not sleep tonight," said the play-by-play guy on the TV feed, and Kahn may be sleeping easier these days as well. When Rubio chose to play in Barcelona for two seasons instead of coming to Minnesota (the team that picked him sixth overall in the 2009 Draft), Kahn got a lot of heat and a lot of people around the league expected the Wolves to eventually deal away their rights to him. But Kahn said Sunday that the plan to bring Rubio over after next season is still in place, and that the Wolves anticipate Rubio to be the beneficiary of two years of seasoning, two years of growing physically and two years of working on his jumper.

- A long, but superb read, if you've got the time.

What Does Rubio Winning The Title Mean For The Wolves?

By Timberwolf at Bleacher Report:

This says to me that Rubio did, in fact, think of joining the Wolves this past season. Rubio stated that he wanted to win the Euroleague title, and a few Wolves fans thought, "What if he wins it in his first year?"

What does that do for the Wolves if anything?

I'll tell you what, from a scale of one to 10—one being nothing, two being a little, five being something, and 10 being everything—only two, five, and 10 actually matter.

On one hand, it could have Rubio say, "I've won the title, I think I'm ready now, but one more year will help." It could have him say, "Maybe I should go to the NBA this upcoming season since I've accomplished my dream." Or it could say, "I will go to the NBA because I won the title now."

- It means you still draft Wall if we get the #1 pick.  Or, at the very least we make a nice trade and end up with Turner. Nothing less is acceptable.

Ricky Rubio Update and NBA Trade Rumors

By Austin Burtin at Dime Mag:

Ricky Rubio was one of the hottest topics of NBA discussion and debate last summer, then pretty much fell off the radar once he decided he’d rather stay in Spain for a couple of years than play for the Timberwolves right away.

Don’t think they’ve forgotten about Rubio in Minnesota, though, especially when fans and front-office had to watch fellow ‘09 draftees Stephen Curry, Brandon Jennings and Darren Collison — all point guards picked after the Wolves took Rubio — go on to make this year’s All-Rookie First Team.

Wolves Should Take Evan Turner Over John Wall?

By Joe Mikolai at Bleacher Report:

The Wolves would be assured of drafting either John Wall, whom many see as the prize of this class, or the “consolation prize,” Ohio State combo guard Evan Turner. While you likely cannot go wrong either way, Turner would better suit Minnesota for a number of reasons.

Wall is only attractive to Minnesota as part of a major roster overhaul. His presence would essentially force at least one trade now, involving Ramon Sessions, and likely another in a year, involving Johnny Flynn.  But these trades would only take place after it was assured that Ricky Rubio was coming to Minnesota, as I pointed out in my last column.

This option remains exciting. By executing a number of trades, the Wolves could continue to find missing pieces. And there are a lot of those when you are coming off of a franchise-tying low of 15 wins this season.

Wall would also bring flash and intrigue to the Wolves. ESPN and the national media would now have a reason to watch, and follow, Wolves' games.

The Wolves would have a legit future star on which to build around. But in reality, Turner does all that and more.

- You take John Wall if you have the chance.  Don't get cute here. With that said, Turner is a great consolation prize.  Or, in the event that we trade down, Kahn better make damn sure we receive fair compensation in return.  How would the Bulls look if they passed up Derrick Rose for OJ Mayo?  Not quite the same exact comparison, but you get the point.

TWolves Will Try to Sign Rudy Gay?

By Charley Walters at the Pioneer Press:

It's a good bet the Minnesota Timberwolves will try to sign Rudy Gay from Memphis if he becomes a free agent this summer, but the Grizzlies are expected to re-sign the 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward. And if Gay were to leave, it's virtually certain it would be for the hometown Washington Wizards, who have $22.5 million in salary cap space.

- Take it for what it's worth, but he pretty much just blatantly makes up stuff all the time.

Ricky Rubio: Champion

Written by roundhouse on .

rubio_champion

Rubio and Regal FC Barcelona took down Olympiacos today in the Euroleague Finals, by the score of 86-68. Juan Carlos Navarro was the Final Four MVP. This is a very good thing for Wolves fans, because if you remember back to last summer, Rubio said that part of the reason he wanted to stay in Europe was to win the Euroleague. Now that he's got that accomplished, hopefully we'll see him come over next year, barring an NBA lockout. If our roster looks anything like it does today, Rubio would be the only player on our team with any success at the professional level and probably still our youngest player as well. Congrats Ricky.

Report: Pekovic/Wolves approaching agreement?

From Αντώνης Καλκαβούρας | of The Gazette

As you can clearly read in the article above, Ronzone is already at it and involved in reaching an agreement with Pech. Pretty good news. I'm excited to see what the Pekmeister will bring to the table if this goes down.

Wolves News 5/7/10: All Eyez On Ricky

Written by roundhouse on .

rubio_regal

The Euroleague Final Four gets underway today in Paris. Ricky's FC Barcelona team will be taking on annual powerhouse CSKA Moscow on NBATV at noon US-EST. The other matchup pits another Euroleague powerhouse in Greek team Olympiacos against Partizan Belgrade. The Euroleague Final Four uses a single game elimination win or go home format and should make for some good entertainment.

DraftExpress takes a look at the NBA prospects playing in the Final Four

Rubio’s per-game statistics are not all that impressive when viewed from the vantage point of a NBA fan—he plays just 20 minutes per game and has always been more of a distributor than a scorer—but there is little doubt that he’s improved substantially as the starting point guard of arguably the best team in European basketball.

Many would argue that he garnered far better experience playing for championships in the Euroleague and ACB this season than he would have losing 50+ games on a non-competitive team in the NBA.

This Euroleague Final Four likely represents the biggest challenge of Rubio’s young career thus far, and it will be fascinating to see how he fares on this stage. Kahn and Rubio’s NBA agent, Dan Fegan, will be watching him closely--as will every other NBA team in attendance, and his many fans around the globe.

Semifinal #1: CSKA vs. Barcelona (Fri., 12 pm EST)
These two teams met in the semis last year, where CSKA pulled out a 82-78 win. Much like last year, you have a contrast in styles between the two teams--Barca likes to push the pace while CSKA wants a more controlled atmosphere on both ends of the floor. Both teams spread the floor very well and are tough on the defensive end. Should be a great game between two closely matched teams.

Semifinal #2: Olympiacos vs. Partizan (Fri., 3pm EST)
Olympiacos' season ended in the semis last year, but this year they're a heavy fave over Partizan. Partizan is the clear underdog in the Final Four field. Partizan has played way above their station all season. Partizan just does not have the depth of the other Final 4 teams. These two teams split in first round play, Partizan winning at home by six and Olympiacos cruising to a 81-60 win at home. Though, Maric was absent with a mid-season injury for the 21-point loss in Greece.

If that isn't enough info for your liking, Tim Warren at The Washington Post takes on the Final Four as well

Barcelona, on the other hand, has the undisputed rock star of the tournament, floppy-haired point guard Ricky Rubio. Drafted in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves last year, Rubio decided to stay in his native Spain. His precocious playmaking at the 2008 Olympics, when he was only 17, made believers of the NBA stars on the gold-medal-winning U.S. team.

When Mensah-Bonsu, who played briefly alongside Rubio last year in Spain, was asked Thursday if he is ready for the NBA, the response was quick. "Ricky Rubio can play for any team, anywhere," he said. "He plays way beyond his years."

Bleacher Report writer Timber Wolf thinks the Wolves need to be selfish this offseason

The Wolves have a legitimate chance(19.9%) of nabbing the number one pick, and if they do, the question is, will they attempt to grab the second pick?

Is it greed? Maybe. Is it smart though? More than likely.

5/5/10 Wolves News (or lack thereof)

Written by roundhouse on .

joakimnoah_draft

Even when looking at the 2007 draft in hindsight, Joakim Noah is still underrated

So, looking back, how should the draft gone? Here is one person’s opinion:

7. Joakim Noah by the Minnesota Timberwolves would have been a great fit. Al Jefferson would have been able to play his more natural PF spot and Noah’s defense would have balanced Jefferson.

-How does he have Greg Oden, Rodney Stuckey, Jeff Green, and Wilson Chandler all getting drafted ahead of JoNo? Can't say I agree with that in the least bit.

Ramon Sessions Season in Review from Jonah Ballow at Timberwolves.com

A Nuggets fan is scared that they'll end up like the Wolves

The Target Center is a nice building, wedged right in downtown Minneapolis. It was built in 1990, and the box office looks like a futuristic terminal. On this night, the lowly T-Wolves took on the Golden State Warriors in a clash of bottom-feeding, clown ball (granted this wasn’t a marquee game to attend). There were so few people walking around the upper part of the stadium that as I walked to my seat about five minutes before tip-off, I didn’t see anyone in the hallway for a good minute and a half. It was so quiet in the arena—aside from the promotion crew’s constant cajoling and launching of T-shirts—that it was as if the T-Wolves fans had their life force sucked out of them by years of bad basketball, leaving unsmiling husks in their place.

Earlier in the night I had grabbed some food at an Irish bar near the stadium, and the bartender had commented to me that if the T-Wolves don’t soon pick up another player like Kevin Garnett (traded to Boston in 2007) that he didn’t think the team would be around for much longer. Later, I overheard some depressed fans bemoaning the departure as well. Sad pining for a player that left three years prior is never something you want to hear from the fan base; nor do you want to witness a mildly enthusiastic ovation for marginal players like Darko Milicic. Both happened at the game, and if that’s not a testimony that Minnesota fans have given up all hope, then the fact that the Timberwolves dancers got a bigger round of applause than any of the players should be.

-I can't say I blame him, I wouldn't want my team to be like the Wolves either. Wait, my team IS the Wolves. Doh! Everything he had to say about his experience of going to the Target Center to see a Wolves game is so sad yet so true.

Kevin Love Sucks At Beer Pong

Written by roundhouse on .

0428-kevin-love-tmz-wm-1-credit-1

The Timberwolves big man -- who's of legal drinking age by the way -- hit up his uncle Mike's crib (yes, Mike Love....lead singer of the Beach Boys)... and whipped out the booze, solo cups and ping pong balls recently.

Here's the rub -- while Love is usually a pretty good shot on the court, we're told his team lost on the table ... 'cause Love couldn't nail down the range.

- Come on man! You should be able to hit those cups in your sleep. Being the weak link on your team is unacceptable! Keep practicing big fella, and maybe you can be a beer pong champ someday.

P.S. Please find a healthy mix of playing beer pong and working on your basketball skills this summer. 80% beer pong 20% practicing sounds about right.

Playoff Update - 2nd Round Preview

Written by roundhouse on .

The 2nd round of the playoffs kick off tonight with the Celtics versus the Lebrons. Let's take a quick look at the matchups.

(1) Cavs vs. (4) Celtics

lebronhoop

The news is out that Lebron has won his 2nd consecutive MVP award, joining Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Moses Malone, Tim Duncan, and Steve Nash as the only back-to-back winners of the award. No surprise there. Lebron is on a mission to take home the championship this year, but first he's got to get through the Celtics, who looked better than most people expected in their first round matchup against the Heat. This series should have all the intensity of the Celtics/Cavs series two years ago when they met in the Eastern Conference Finals. Since Britt Robson can do a much better job than myself of previewing this series, I'll just direct you to his Cavs/Celtics Preview.

Next Game: tonight at 7:00 on TNT

(2) Magic vs. (3) Hawks/(6) Bucks winner

jameernelson

The Magic were the most dominant team of the 1st round. Even with Dwight Howard being a complete nonfactor and Vince Carter being either hit-or-miss, but mostly miss, the Magic took care of business and swept the Bobcats. With respect to Deron Williams, nobody raised their stock more during the 1st round than Jameer Nelson. He carried the Magic offensively agains the Bobcats, averaging 24 points per game. He did get some help from Rashard Lewis as well, who averaged 16 ppg on 52% FG and 46% 3PT shooting. If Vince Carter and Dwight Howard get it going, this team is really scary. The Hawks have not looked good in the 1st round, and the Bucks don't have enough firepower. I expect the Magic should be able to get by either team without too much difficulty unless the Hawks catch fire and never cool off.

Next Game: Bucks @ Hawks, Sunday at 12:00 on ABC

(1) Lakers vs. (5) Jazz

carlosboozer

In case you missed it, the Lakers closed out their series last night against the Thunder with a putback by Pau Gasol with 0.5 seconds remaining. Kevin Durant had a really bad night, and yet the Thunder still almost won that game. That team is going to be a force in the coming years. But enough about that, onto the next series that pits the Lakers against the Jazz. The Jazz took down the Nuggets in 6 games while missing two of their five starters. Kirilenko has been out for awhile now with a calf inury and Okur went down early in the 1st game against the Nuggets with a season-ending achilles injury. With that said, the Jazz have gotten huge performances out of both Carlos Boozer and Paul Milsap. Nobody has been better in the first round than Deron Williams. He was the first player in NBA playoff history to get a double-double in points and assists for the first 5 games of a series. He then did it Game 6 as well. On the other side, Kobe looked very human against the Thunder, but Gasol is going to be a difficult matchup for the Jazz. If the Jazz can find a way to split the first 2 games of the series, AK-47 is expected to be ready to play for Game 3 and will provide them with a huge boost.

Next Game: Sunday at 2:30 on ABC

(3) Suns vs. (7) Spurs

duncan_ginobili

There's no longer a Big 3 on the Spurs, it's more like a Big Old 3 and their sidekick Geoge Hill. Those four guys took turns beating up on the Mavs in the 1st round. The Spurs have been starting George Hill and BatManu in the backcourt ever since Tony Parker first went down an injury late in the season, and even with Parker back, they've stuck with it. Tony Parker has taken over Manu's old spot as super sixth man, and it's all been very effective. The Spurs may be a 7 seed, but that doesn't mean much of anything right now. Everyone on their team is healthy, and they look like a top seed. These are two teams that are very familiar with each other. It used to be a yearly tradition that the Spurs would knock the Suns out of the playoffs. For the Suns, Jason Richardson was a deadly scorer in the 1st round, averaging 24 points per game on 53% shooting. What's even better is that he's shooting 51% from 3-point land. The Suns need more of the same out of him against the Spurs if they want to take this series. The Spurs are most likely going to use their tried and true method of beating the Suns, which involves slowing down the tempo of the game to a snail's pace and beating the crap out of them. Amare needs to step up in a big way and play like he gives a damn. It's now or never. He's going to have to hold his own in the paint and pull down a good share of rebounds over Duncan, Mcdyess, Blair. If he played some defense, that would go a long ways, but that may be asking too much out him. This should be a great series.

Next Game: Monday at 9:30 on TNT

Tony Ronzone to Replace Hoiberg?

Written by Mike on .

nextscout

Some interesting Wolves-related rumblings from Sam Amick, as reported on his Twitter page:

According to league source, Detroit Pistons director of basketball operations Tony Ronzone will become Minnesota's assistant GM next month.

Move is unrelated to departure of Fred Hoiberg, the T-Wolves' former VP of basketball ops who is now head coach at Iowa State

Ronzone seems like a fairly decent hire, however words around the interweb suggest he was the man responsible for passing on Carmelo Anthony in the 2003 draft and drafting our good friend Darko Milicic. Just what we need!

Ronzone was actually featured in TIME magazine. Here is an interesting feature on the alleged new front office member.

As a rule, Ronzone looks for the same things most scouts look for: hand skills, shooting and footwork. "I'm really into watching feet," he says. "Can they run? Do they have balance?" Unlike most scouts, though, he never takes notes while evaluating players and usually refrains from asking a coach questions until a third or fourth meeting. "The big reason," he says, "is respect. Some guys go to practices and they focus on one player and scribble a bunch of notes; it comes off arrogant. The Kazakhs feel their club team is as important as the Pistons, and just because we like a player doesn't mean they'll give him up. I've got to respect their club that has bad rims, bad balls, bad floor. I'll invite them to Detroit to see one of our practices. Because if I do like one of their guys, we're going to need their help."

While I strongly disagree with a few of Kahn's moves, I have to give him props for bringing in some relatively high profile front office and coaching staff this past offseason. Not to mention Sessions may have been our highest profile free agent signing since, well, ever (sad). I mean, we can be cynical about the Darko thing, but bringing this guy in to see what he can do is very far from a bad thing. Certainly seems much more experienced than Hoiberg, just maybe without the local boy charm.

Thoughts?

Best Wishes Freddy! Wolves/NBA News 4.28.10

Written by College Wolf on .

Fred Hoiberg is Moving On To Bigger and Hopefully Better Things

From Phil Miller at the Star Tribune:

Since the day he accepted Glen Taylor's offer to join the Timberwolves' front office five years ago, running the Wolves franchise was a job Fred Hoiberg appeared destined to hold. Until, that is, he was offered a job he was born to hold.

Hoiberg, who led Ames High to an Iowa state championship before embarking on an all-conference career across town at Iowa State, has agreed to return to his hometown to become head coach at his alma mater.

Hoiberg, the Wolves' vice president for basketball operations, did not return calls to his suburban Minneapolis home, but the Cyclones scheduled a Wednesday morning news conference to introduce him as the replacement for Greg McDermott, who resigned Monday to take a similar job at Creighton.

And from Randy Peterson at the DesMoinesRegister.com:

Ames, Ia. — Iowa State has re-elected the Mayor.

Fred Hoiberg is returning to town, this time as the head men’s basketball coach. Hoiberg was hired Tuesday as Greg McDermott’s successor after his surprising move to Creighton.

“Bringing him in is the biggest thing we’ve had since Johnny Orr,” current guard Charles Boozer said of the former coach, who coincidentally coached Hoiberg at Iowa State.

Iowa State senior associate athletic director Steve Malchow confirmed the hiring Tuesday night. There was also a team meeting Tuesday night.

Negotiations with Hoiberg, the former Ames prep who was nicknamed the Mayor by teammates during a sterling Cyclone career, began Tuesday afternoon, according to Malchow.

“From my standpoint, it was an outstanding hire,” Boozer said.

- Apparently there are rumors on the street that Fred (and others in the Wolves Front Office) either don't get along with Kahn, or don't have faith in him to competently turn around the Wolves Organization.  Who knows how true that may or may not be.  I'm not going to say either way, because I don't know.  Still, I wish him the best of luck with his new position, and have faith he'll do a great job.  He was truly one of the great people that came through this organization.

Q&A With Coach Rambis

From Berry Tramel at NewsOK.com:

Kurt Rambis is a Laker icon. Rambis played 14 years in the NBA, including nine seasons with Lakers, winning four league titles. Then Rambis worked for the Lakers for 11 years, as assistant coach, assistant general manager and interim head coach (1998-99). Last summer, he became head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Rambis was at the Staples Center on Tuesday night for Game 5 of the Lakers-Thunder series.
The History of MN #1 Draft Picks

Interesting read from Joe Mikolai:

Regardless of the sport, professional sports drafts are always a crapshoot. Some are going to hit and many are going to miss. Many of the executives from the teams that drafted in the first round of the NFL draft last weekend don't know it yet, but they drafted the next NFL bust.

It happens and it happened last week. We just have to wait and see who emerges, ironically by not emerging. Still, with the NFL draft now come and gone, why not shift the attention to the next exciting sporting event that will surely be covered by ESPN in-depth and that being the NBA draft, specifically the NBA draft lottery.

That lottery is to be held May 18, and as a fan of the 15-67 Minnesota Timberwolves, believe me, we know when it coming as we've been waiting for it.

Al Jefferson to the Houston Rockets?

Dave Hardisty, founder of Houston Rockets message board Clutchfans.net, writing in his annual season recap, mentions Minnesota Timberwolves forward/center Al Jefferson as a potential offseason trade target for the Houston Rockets.

While not Bosh, Jefferson would be an enticing addition.  While the injury history is frightening, I have for some time considered Al to be the most offensively gifted center in basketball.  The 25-year-old would immediately become option A in the Houston offense.

Still, if the Bosh route fails, Al Jefferson would be quite the consolation prize.  Given the concerns over his compatibility with Kevin Love, and Minnesota’s purported preference for the latter, I do think Jefferson could be available at a palatable cost.

- Please, take his attitude and salary off our hands.  Brooks, Scola, and draft picks would be nice (wistful thinking.)  Just kidding, I shudder to think about Rockets GM Daryl Morey negotiating a trade with our own Trader Kahn. We'd probably end up giving them Jefferson, the rights to Rubio, Target Field, and Glen Taylor's Printing Business.  Egads.

More on Al Jefferson to the Rockets

I think we might have overlooked this one. Jefferson has always been a favorite of mine as well, and I think he would add a rare dose of flexibility to our team. He's not a natural power forward, but he is quick enough to play the position. In that regard, perhaps the Rockets could pair Jefferson with Yao in the starting lineup, and then rotate Big Al in at center with Jordan Hill or Luis Scola coming off the bench, depending on who we would keep.

As long as we're talking about injury histories, let's not forget how closely Jefferson falls next to Chris Bosh on the scale. Each has only played in one full season, and while Jefferson has missed more games per season in his career, he's coming off a 76-game year. I'd like to think that with all of the Rockets' season-killing injuries in the past that health is a factor when it comes to making additions, but there are only a handful of good-to-great players out there that don't miss 5-10 games a year due to injury.

Mark Madsen to the Hall of Fame!!!

By Matt Schawb at the Contra Costa Times:

Mark "Mad Dog" Madsen starred on some great San Ramon Valley High basketball teams in the early 1990s, but longtime Wolves coach John Raynor was perhaps even more impressed by Madsen's humility.

"He was a self-effacing person, always deflecting any praise," Raynor said recently. "And that's who he is as a human being. He's not putting that on. That's who he is. He is an incredible ambassador for the human race. It's way beyond basketball."

Madsen, a Utah resident, will be among four inductees Thursday during the 20th annual Tri-Valley Sports Hall of Fame event at the Palm Event Center in the Vineyard in Pleasanton. The other inductees are Justin Andrade (bull riding), Derek Guffey (swimming) and Marci Porter Lucier (rowing, America's Cup sailing).

- Ok, not the NBA Hall of Fame, but c'mon, he deserves some props!

Minnesota Lynx to Start Season Without Agustus and Wiggins

From Tim Leighton at the Pioneer Press:

Training camp got off to a hellish start Sunday for the Minnesota Lynx.

The team's sky-high optimism — and first day of practice — soured mightily with the announcement that starters Seimone Augustus and Candice Wiggins will miss all of training camp and, likely, beyond.

Augustus, 26, who spent the offseason rehabilitating her surgically repaired left knee, had surgery Saturday to remove benign fibroids from her lower back and reproductive system.

- Sorry everyone, slow news day.
